I have a 1970 Ford F-100 with a 360 engine and a New Process 435 four-speed transmission. The cab has the 8 inch bump because of the transmission. The transmission is starting to have problems and I will need to have it rebuilt or replaced. So, since I will have to have transmission work soon, I thought that I would ask this question.
My question is, how hard is it to convert to a column shift from a floor shift?? Are there any column shift packages that work with four-speeds for Ford trucks?? I have seen older cars that had a four-on-the-tree factory setup, however not anything like that on a Ford.
I know that the three-speed transmissions are on the column. So is changing to a three-speed transmission the only way to get column shift, or is there a way to do it with a four speed transmission??
(Another insteristing question is is there a way to set up column shift with a five speed?? I have never seen a five-speed on the tree, only three and four speeds).
No 4 on the tree! You could install a three speed standard transmission or a C6 automatic. Both of these would require a column change. But none of that fixes the hump in the floor problem. I suggest you fix what you have.

So, besides replaceing the transmission (which needs to be done anyways), replacing the steering column, and adding the link bar from the steering column to the transmission, is there anything else that needs to be done??
Snow, May I respectfully suggest you reconsider? The standard three speed transmission is a light weight set up and while you certainly can install it in your truck, Why? You will still be shifting gears and that huge hump in the floor will still be there. Those monster four speed transmissions are easily rebuilt, usually just bearings and syncros, shift forks and seals. Junk yards are full of these transmissions.
