When I change 3rd members in my 9" rear I take a cable tie and hook the metal tag(if I've got it) and the speedo. gear to it, right through one of the mounting holes, so it will all be there when I want to use it again.

Good tip! you must be an "organized" person 
If you don't have a metal tag... Clean off a nice smooth spot (grind if necessary) right there on the side of the pig where the tag should be. Use a letter/number set to stamp in the ratio and any other info known.
You might also want to tag the speedo gear with the tire size.
