I am looking at possibly buying a 96 turbo diesel. Mtgrzlyman checked out for me, and I still can't thank him enough for doing that, which he thinks needs the turbo seal replaced because there was some oil on top of the engine. I don't know much about diesels so what is the turbo seal and what kind of job is it to change. Thanks for any help.
we need pics to help better.
could be the epbv..mine started leaking and i just disonnected it.
already mentioned turbo pedistal seals.
hpop.
fuel pump.
fuel filter.
hpop reservoir.
hpo rail plugs the little ones.
not too hard of stuff. but we need to know exactly whats going on and where it is to help you.
The situation is, this is a truck that I am considering buying but I live in Vermont and the truck is in Montana. Mtgzlyman lives in the town where the truck is and did me a big favor and checked it out. I have not seen it but he said there looked to be oil on top of the engine and that is what he thought it could possibly be. I am trying to get an idea of how involved it would be to fix if that is the problem and the cost, so I could factor that into my offer price. But hopefuly it is something simpler and cheaper. If you have any estimate on time to do the job and cost, that would help a lot. Thank you.

If the price is right and you can drive it buy it. You can worry about all of those things later after you get it home. Depending on how badly it leaks, you may have to put a quart or two of oil in it on the way home, but all of the things that 1997F350 mentioned are things you can pick away at and work on right at home.
Is it a 4X4? If so get a set of steps from a mobile home because then you can more comfortably spend the time up in the engine compartment just tinkering and fixing and cleaning, etc.. I got an old aluminum double step set that I just set in front of the trucks wherever I work on them. It makes a big difference.

i agree or tell the dealer to fix it. if they wont either dont buy it or do and do a little work on it. it cant be that bad.
