Quick qestion...I'm restoring a 74 f100 and i pulled a 390 out of it. A buddy of mine offered me a 300 I6, will this swap go smoothly and will a C6 tranny from the 390 bolt up to it?
Mmmm....Well what I'm really doing is I want to use an NV4500 tranny and the bellhousing I have is the same pattern as the C6, would it be possible to use a bellhousing that will mate up with the I6 and still use the NV4500?
I would have the 390 rebuilt, the 300 is a great engine, but the 390 will overall outpower the 300 and any cash you would have saved after all the other parts you need for the conversion probably wouldn't be worth the head aches of the conversion. Just my opinion.
Ya it will go smoothly. I Recently did this same swap in my 72 f 100. There was nothing wrong with my 390, I just don't like 8 bangers.
The FE 8 popper mounts are the same as the inline 6 mounts, you just need to slide them forward a notch to the predrilled holes. You will always encounter some snags in a swap but, disconnect everything take the pig out and put the 300 in after you slide the mounts forward. Wam Bam Thank you maam.
move the frame mounts forward, engine drops in with the right motor mounts. a small block bellhousing will be needed as well as the 300's flywheel. Any 80's small block powered truck with a c6 drops right in as well, except you'll need to swap over the shifter linkage from the 70's type c6. radiator hoses may not line up. Overall, it's pretty easy, and doesn't cost much if junkyard shopping. Also a longer throttle cable from the mount on the firewall or lokar cable if going with a 4bbl.
