I have a 1984 FORD F250 with a 351 Windsor and a 2 barrel carburetor. The engine is practically new I just rebuilt it, the carb to, and the ignition- plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and the coil. It just started doing this it was doin great for about 2 months and then one day I started it ran just fine but every time it punch the gas to get a lower idle speed the engine would idle just barley enough to stay alive. After a few minutes of extremely low idle it will level out at the normal rate of speed, But as soon as I push the gas to the floor back to low idle. It still runs perfectly and outruns little import cars but the low idle is a problem for me. Any thoughts? Ideas? All Appreciated!! Thanks
Your automatic choke isn't working correctly. Turn the black plastic housing toward the back of the engine about an eighth of an inch at a time. I have to do this to mine every time the weather gets cooler (turn toward the front of the engine) or warmer (rear). usually in the spring and in the fall.
Give this a try before going deeper into the carb.
I have an 84F150 too, Variable ventri or the climate control carbs are tricky. There are a ton of vaccum lines on both setups, might be a vaccum leak or egr stickin. If there's any electrical hookups in the rear of the carb I would check them, plus those carbs have a MAP sensor that leans and richens I would check that also.
