we also have the 480 limit i am glad to see someone building a 81 i have wanted to build that style but all the parts i ahve are for older ones i offten wondered if the 80-86 body is lighter? witch is a good thing more weight you can hang off the front the better if you have any questions let me know i check this thing daily good luck hope to see you out there
Im not sure on the weight of the older trucks but my 1985 f150 with a 351w is right around 4500 lbs. depends on how much gas is in there and on an f250 witha big block an heavier axles it would be a little bit more than 4500 lbs
One question that i have is what gearing did you have in your axles and what kind of transmission and transfer case?
there is a C6 in there right now and i was plannig rebuilding that one and using it
i personaly like like 4:10's it seems to work well with stock tranny's and cases i have seen a few autos run well but i would go with a 4spd you need alot of power to compete with an auto and i know of a few guys that had an auto and have the power but went to a 4spd and the trucks rilly turned on then i also run a old style devorced tranny and case i started pulling a 71 ford f250 and built that running gear so when i switch over to a 78 body i keeped the older style running gear it seemed to work well but the married set up works rilly well also and you can get a kit from pro fab for them makeing them bullet prof i keep kicking the idea around about running an auto myself but it just seem's like the 4speeds work better just make shure you have a np 205 4:10s good u joints something strong maybe get a heavyer duty rear drive shat made and a good running motor and you should do well but maybe if you build the motor so it rillly screams an auto would be good but most guys i know that run an auto run 4:56 gears and just a thought a run a 44 front witth spicer joints and lock out and 3 yrs on it and havent broke it yet dont underestamte a 44 they are a good front unless you have the 60 already that of course use it
