I never would have believed this if I hadn't tried it myself. My Mother told me to use Windex (or other window cleaner) and plain old newspaper to clean the windows in my truck.
Spray the cleaner on the window and fold the newspaper and use it like a rag, turning and refolding when needed.
I'll be darned ... clean as could be and NO STREAKS!!
Boys, it still pays to listen to your Mamma!
My first job was at a boat dealership. One of my duties was to clean and wash all the new boats in the lot. I also used newspaper to clean the windows. But I used vinegar as a cleaning solution. Works good on plexiglass.
My father had some moonshine left over after some years and cleaned the windows of my old car with it. they sure did get clean, but man im glad i didn't get pulled over. if you sat in the car long enough you were drunk from just smelling it.

I'm in the autoglass business so I get to wash a few new windshields a day. I have found that a good quality glass cleaner such as Sprayway, or something like it, will do a nice job. Use a good quality soft paper towel to wipe it off. Try not to wash the glass when it is too hot to touch, cause it will try to leave a film on the glass. Don't use newspaper for a towel, it will leave minute scratches in the glass. I have won money betting on that.
Question for 66Ranger: being in the auto glass buisiness do you have any experiance in repairing a small rock chip in a windsheild? or know someone who does?, I've got one in a 5 year old windsheild in my now defunct '70 Ford Econoline van that I would like to have repaired if possible, Thanks!!
Supercab, We've been repairing rock chips for about 10 years. It works on stars better than cracks. Some companies advertise that they can fix cracks 18 inches long but I think they are blowing smoke. I try to limit them to 3 inches, anything over that and I tell the customer it "may" work and let them make the choice and take the risk. If you get hit by an object, I recomend that you cover the chip on the outside of the glass with some clear tape until you can get it repaired. This keeps water, trash, bug juice, etc. out of the break and makes a better repair.
its the printers ink that cleans so well. I remember my mother and grandmother using it all the time. Also that film on the inside of your windows in your truck is not dirt, it is a chemical breakdown of the plastics that make up the interior.
*Note for use on outside only.* I saw this on some car show on Sunday. It's called Bar Keepers Friend, you can use it to remove crud from your windshield like road film, hardened bug entrails, wax from gas station washes, etc. Stuff works like a charm, but is a pain to find. Found it at King Soopers for all you CO. folk.
What actually is that product? Harmful to anything?

Ok, check it out: Everybody likes Rain-X, right? The only bad thing is how bad it sucks to buff it, and sometimes you can't see the streaks when you're doing it, so you get rainbows across your windows when you're driving. To clean windows, Rain-x makes a windshield washer fluid, it's supposed to go in the washer reservior, but if you bottle it up, and use it like Windex, then all you have is concentrated glass cleaner that leaves Rain-X on your windows, and you don't even have to buff it. I'd like to publicly thank my friend from Ohio who let me in on this secret, even though he's a Pontiac guy, I can respect that more than another one of those, as The Rock says, "one of the millions and millions" who live and die (but mostly die) by the bowtie. seriously, it sells for about $2.50, AutoZone carries it, and it's the best way to have clean windows, apply Rain-X, and save money in a one gallon jug! I know, I sound like a groupie, but it works. Rubbing alcohol, ammonia and vinegar, they all work too. For tinted windows, you gotta use the alcohol-based cleaners, or it;ll give you that custom "purple-faded, do-it-yourself" attitude to your windows. TK

Best thing I've found is one of those micro fiber cloths and water. Don't have any idea if it harms the glass, but I have use it to clean the whole car without car wash. Only have to wax it more often.
