I have an '01 7.3 PSD and I am wanting to put either dual exhaust or upgrade to the 4" pipes. My neighbor is telling me he knows a guy who put dual straight pipes (ie. no mufflers or cat. converter) on it and got a really big boost in performance and mileage. Since cat converters are not required in my state, that is an option for me. Heres my question: Should I be concerned with the O2 sensor and how will it be effected.....and what about the turbo? The guys at the Ford dealership told me I could damage the turbo because the engine is programed to run with a certain amount of exhaust back-pressure and if I put dual exhaust on it I will take away the pressure and throw off the computer and O2 sensor.
Any help would be appreciated. I bought this 01 brand new and haven't made any changes to it yet...but am looking to improve the economy and performance. I tried a Hyper-tech programmer, and my mileage went in the dumps. I went from 20 mpg hwy to around 13. I have always heard that the airfilter and exhaust are 2 of the most important things with deisel engines.
My advice is to do a search on "straight pipes" and or "dual exhaust" and you will have all your questions answered and then some.
From what I've read on here and other diesel sites is that whatever you can do to open the exhaust to let the motor breathe is a good thing, and the only real world difference between duals and a single pipe is looks.
Give me a call we'll be able to help you on exhaust systems. We have all the MBRP and AFE systems in stock and have been working with customers for years on them.
i used then banks down pipe, freightliner ypipe, pipes exit in front of rear wheels. oh did i mention its custom made.i still have the spare. sounds bad *** to me. but hey we all have our own opinions.
