shifter bushings?
The gear shift rattles like a son-of-a-gun at times, especially when accelerating up a hill. My understanding from reading this site is that a likely cause of this is worn shifter bushings, but when I asked my mechanic to take a look at them while he had it apart, he said that he thought the shifter went right into the top of the tranny and as such didn't have bushings.
Can anyone clarify this for me?

If you have side-to-side slop, these are the problem in all likelihood.
When I look at mt shifter, there was no sign of the guts above the shifter ball. Everything underneath was fine, but I imagine when my tranny was swapped in from the donor Ranger, no one bothered to make sure the upper spring and washer were replaced. Also, my shifter pins were sheared and needed replacing. A stealership won't have 'em, so go to a trannys hop instead. These pins are held in by the round plate holding the shifter in place.
This explains everything but the shifter pins that have to be yanked out(wedge out with flat head of some sort--screwdriver will work).
The washer (7Z120) has tabs, as you can see, that fit right into the slots on 7228 with the other washer sandwiched in between.
One problem I had was after the install, I couldn't shift gears. Ooops. Pull everything off and use a flat head to line up the rails into neutral...problem solved.
