I currently have a chunk of iron attached to the front of my 72 F250 4x4. I want to put a stock bumper back on it. Two questions:
1) Does the stock bumper bolt directly to the frame ends or is there a bracket I have to get to attach the bumper to before attaching it to the frame? (The chunk of iron I currently have is attached to side rails of the frame.)
2) Where is the best place to get the new bumper? Dennis Carpenter sells one for $200. They say they sell it without brackets. (??????) Motor Haven sells one for $190.50. And then theres the "Ford Truck Parts & Auto Body Parts" web site that sells a new front bumper for $91.95! Is this a case of "getting what you pay for" I find it odd that the last company can sell it for $100 dollars less than anyone else.
Any assistance on the bracket question and where to get the bumper would be most appreciated!
My 1970 F250 4x4's front bumper mounts to a bracket. The bracket then mounts to the side of the frame. I think that all non-F250 4x4's attach directly to the frame. Could be wrong. I found a few bumpers at the salvage yard. They want 50.00 but none were in good enough shape for me. I'm to picky.
Anyone know which year's bumpers fit the 67-72 truck?
The only new bumper I can find with a warrente is on this site's Motorhaven link. D-C is labled as an import. rust?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-11-03 AT 05:09 PM (EST)]any fulsize ford pickup bumper will fit from 67-77, if you are puting it on a highboy(f250 4x4 67-77) you will need the little brackets if you dont have them.
what I did on one of my trucks is I cut off the front frame snouts off of a 2wd truck and trimed them to fit on the outside of my 4x4 truck frame and drilled two holes so I could bolt them on.
if you have access to a welding machine you could also just have them welded to the end of the truck.
while you are at it move the bumper foward just a smidgin and it will give a little extra room on the corners in case you bump something.
What I would do (and have done) to protect the truck is make sure your front bumper is 1/4 steel of at least C channel. You can buy something small enough to fit inside the bumper and bolt the bumper to that. Attach the C-channel directly to the frame or brackets. What you can do is put a good inch (5/4 board or 2x4) of pressure treated wood between the frame ends and bumper/bracket. In a forward hit, the wood will compress or split. Especially if the open part of the graon is facing forwards. Grade 8 hardware will keep the bumper on the truck.
If you remember the older Fords cars, those 100 pound chrome bumpers use to be held on by a little shock absorber system that did a lot to keep the frame and bumper structure from being damaged while providing a fair amount of give.
Same idea without losing approach angle or looking wierd.
I have a question since we are talking bumpers. Were, if anywhere, can I get an aluminum front bumper, for a '71 F-100? I have looked at alot of places. Haven't doen a search on the net yet. I am not to that point in project yet, but would like the heads up if anyone knows.
