Relocating my Fuel filter

I have a late 1998 E350 and on these, the fuel filters are located, no, buried under the air intake system so to change it you have to dissasemble the top of the engine and on a van, actually a commercial cut-away it's a time consuming job and usually loose some skin in the process. I was thinking of placeing a full flow filter ahead of this somewhere back at the frame, running it for a while and then removing the original filter element from it's holder, putting the cap on and kissing that nusisence good-by. Sound like a good idea? If so, what flow-thru filter assembly should I use?

I've seen that setup before and don't envy you.

You might start with this guy. He makes some excellent filters but I don't know if they are meant to be mounted pre or post fuel pump.

Burner,

I think if I were in your position, I'd install a quality pre-pump filter like a Dahl or Raycor, using a 2-micron element, and drive it a few miles. Then I'd go through the "exercise" of changing the stock filter.

The stock filter uses a larger pore-size media, so if the 2-micron element doesn't catch something, it's small enough that the stock one likely wouldn't, anyway. The stock one should stay "good-to-go" for a LOT longer, but NOT forever. You may find it necessary to change it again in a few years, but that's a WHOLE lot better than what you've got now.

And you'll still have the protection of catching anything that might conceivably get introduced when changing the pre-pump elements.

That's the arrangement I have now with my pickup, so I have the filter that's easy to change on top, and I am quite well-pleased with the overall performance.
