I can't seem to find the right answer when searching the forums. SO...
Duraspark 3 is computer controlled, no vacuum, no rotating of the distributor to set 10 BTDC, etc... Do I:
1. Set the crank to 0 degrees and put the distributor on #1. This would lead me to assume the computer sets the timing assuming distributor is at #1 at TDC.
2. Set the crank to 10 degrees and put the distributor on #1.
I'm inclined to go with #1, I think I tried it when my idea of setting time wasn' correct because of the funky dist. cap and then led to #2 and it doesn't have any power and at times it sputters a little. She moves but not in the 351W fashion.
This stems from having the heads rebuilt and not paying attention to the distributor when removing parts.
I can look this evening. I have the 82 Car FSM set which covers the EEC III system> i'm sure there is a section on distributor installation. I seem the recall it was like any other Ford small block though which was TDC, rotor pointing straight back, then install and it will turn slightly as the gears engage. You may have to turn the engine at this point to get the pump shaft to slip in.
Okay, it's got a vacuum advance. The correct prodeudure is is pull the vacuum line off the advance, plug the line, and set the timing. Hook the vacuum line back to the advance and verify that the timing advances.
No there is not any vacuum advance. It's controlled by ignition control module.
I'm not talking adjustment by rotating the distributor shaft.
I'm talking about crank timing, I pull the distributor and I align it with either zero or ten degrees on the crank. Not a simple rotation of the distributor once the engine has warmed up using a timing light.
There is no adjustment on this distributor and EEC system.
Duraspark III and EEC-III. EEC-IV and Duraspark II are adjustable on the shaft but not with this baby.
Got it done, I put a timing light on it and it reads 12 degrees, not jumping around, does this sound right? I have an emissions issue to deal with where the air pump isn't pumping air into the heads at the rear thermactor cross-over, but other than that it runs, just not that much power it seems when accelerating. I thought timing would be around 8 to 10 but if 12 is normal for DuraSpark III/EEC then I'll call it good.
