little help with performance

Hi I am buying my first diesel truck a 1999 F-250 automatic it has 142,500 miles in it. Its 2wd, and is a ext. cab

My question to all you experts is should I leave it stock, add some mods. to it?

What type of mods. do you recommend and is there a certain brand to buy and ones to stay away from?

The truck is going to be used to haul lawn mowers and a 16 foot trailer and every now and then NOT much a bob-cat.

Thanks for your help. and ANY advice will be great!

Welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts saleen1996.

4" exhaust is the most common upgrade, though 5" is getting popular.

Mod that baby to the moon!!! Once you start, it's hard to stop. You'll develop PMS, Powerstroke Modification Syndrome.

Try to steer clear of banks stuff. It's good quality, but generally overpriced. The same performance can be had with parts that are much less expensive.

MBRP is a good exhaust. DP Tuner flip chip for your chip. Kwik filter for your intake. Gauges - your choice, just stay with a good quality. You'll want EGT, trans temp, and probably boost. That'll get you started. Stick around here for a while, run some searches on the forum, and you'll learn a lot. Look at what people have in their signatures for ideas on mods. A couple other good ones are CCV mod, AIH delete, a shift kit like a BTS valve body, and a transmission cooler would be good for hauling trailers.

No, no, NO! Don't mod it at all. It is perfectly good stock. It runs very well and is reliable.

See, the problem is that the first mods are cheap (come on, you know you want to try it - the first one's free...) and very satisfying. Then you do another, and another. Next thing you know, you're just like everyone else on this forum!

Saleen- I say go with basic trans mods, intake, exhaust, and chip. Go no farther unless you have big bucks to spend bc you WILL break stuff, trust me i know lol. You start doing injectors and turbos, stuff starts getting very expensive and starts breaking.

You don't even need aftermarket injectors and such to break things. Some of these rigs - with stock injectors and turbos - are hitting 40 to 50 percent more power than stock. Things start to break when you exceed stock power level by that much.

True, but your chances are alot better off at 275-300 rwhp on stock inj than 400+ with bigger inj as far as breakage goes. Thats why i said if you add a chip you need basic trans upgrades, intake, exh and gauges that way you will break alot less.

The cure for PMS is unlimited income and a either 365 days a year off or a personal mechanic!

when you say basic trans mods. do you mean like a bigger trans. cooler, torque converter, and a shift kit? If so what size converter do you guys use? I dont plan on going all crazy with it I want this thing to LAST a very long time! My plan and please tell me if I am on the right path. Was exhaust, intake, CCV mod, and a chip?

One other thing what is a AIH delete?

A trans cooler and shift kit are good starts. A TC would be a nice upgrade too. Call Brian at BTS to get the shift kit and his reccomendations on a TC. Those will help your trans last for a while.

Yes, right path. Gauges first. You've got to know what's going on so you don't melt or burn up something. Then intake, CCV, exhaust, chip, pre-pump and in-tank mods, and the list only ends when you want it to.

AIH = Air Intake Heater. It's rarely ever activated on the truck and only there for emissions control. It blocks 25%-30% of the intake in the y-pipe. Deleting it will open up your intake for more air flow.
