We to do essays in school, none to the lenght of 5 pages, but there pretty long, usally for finals,

I do suppose if your in a university they would just give you whatever length work they want, it is a friggin university, the have to teach you, unlike public schools.

Ahhhh glad im not worrying about that crap im not going to some dumb university

all of a sudden your opinion of me changes dont it?
LOL, most people are like WTF??? when i say im not going to a college after highschool,
anyway, I go to a technical school for HVAC, and am going to make my career in that feild, the why i see it, you can ethier go to college, OR , get in a trade....which to me seem like the better choice, schools are cheaper, work is NEEDED BADLY (ill get a job in no time), and for the most part it pays very well.

No many 15 years olds know what they want to do for there life, im one of those few

I think you ought to go work on some HVAC systems....in AUGUST, in Texas, in some old man's attic....

Only THEN can you actually evaluate whether you want to do it for a living.

Yep, heard it all, the attics get over 130 degrees, not all hvac system are as "acessable" as you would image, and your not always going to be working for the nicest people in the world....can someone please tell me of anyjob where you dont deal with sh-it when you start it other then a college job, which may not be as worth it as other may think. See, im sure im going to be in hvac, the pay is good, sure its not the only job with good pay, but better yet, i love it !!! I have been in my hvac class sence september, and i havent seen anything big enough to turn me away. Not only that, what else can i be, without college that is? Plumber, same crap as hvac, except i dont want to do it, same with electrical. Automotive is a dying trade, soon you will have o go to college for that too, so im left with hvac, a job i like, and am willing to suffer intially to become a commercal technition of some sort and make tons of money. I also hard solar is starting to catch on too, which means yet another path i could go.

Trust me hvac isnt he ONLY job ive looked into deeply, its the only one i found interesting enough for me to learn, and eventually become in th feild.

as for bigrigfixer, what turned you away from acountant.....the headeche you must go through to become one? I know that would turn me away...

I had a sociology professor that told me a story, I thought it was pretty funny.

He and his wife were in North Carolina, seeing relatives. Anyway, they were driving around site seeing, and started to drive by a HUGE mansion. sitting on hundreds of acres, with a brick wall surrounding the complex, ivy growing on it, you know, lifestyles of the rich and famous stuff. Well, they made the a turn, went by the front of the house. In the arch over the gate to get in, he said in big words were,

"HIGH SCHOOL DROP OUT"

This was only a few years back, but people can make it out of high school, you've just got to have the idea, and drive to do it. College is little more than a peice of paper that says, "See boss, I learn well"

Most people never use half of what they learn in college in the real world.

I agree, but the thing is, you have to have it. If I don't have that one thing to seperate myself from the crowd, I'm sunk. I've got no connections or anyone to lean on in case of trouble. You have to have that degree! I don't mean to sound like a whiney butt, but I have been unsuccessful in finding a minimum wage job the past 2 summers. I'm a clean cut white kid. What's so bad about that? No idea. I need something to seperate myself from the crowd.

you guys had it good, 50 years ago the schools around here were brand new, now there over populated, thug infested crap piles. rather then replaceing a retiering teacher lets just shove more kids into each class room. how many of you guys sat in small crowded class rooms with up to 40 other students?

im 20 i grew up in the era of writing 5 page reports on old green screend macs and saving them on a 5 1/2 inch floppys.

now days everyones treated as if there goona shoot up the place, homework is piled higher then ever becouse washington keeps pushing new regulations, a high school degree is a useful as any other piece of paper in todays world. congrats heres your deploma and heres a minimum wage job at mcdonalds.

being a free minded individual is looked down apon these days, someone who thinks out side the box is a treat to society. every student must be trained exactly the same, lets cut out all shop and art classes not only to save on the budget but to futher push the idea that everyone is the same.

in the america of yesteryears a kid could walk to school with out being kidnapped, a child could hang around the school grounds to play ball without being looked apon like ther up to no good.

kids wouldnt be half as unrulely if teachers could beat them with a ruler to show them whats what, but in todays sue happy, little johnny just needs some ritalin world we live in that would be a no no.

how many of you were suspended for 2 weeks just becouse some guy hit you? in todays no tolerance schools even being attacked is cause enough to be suspended, with this mindset i went through 3 fights in highschool, each one of them i was provoked so instead of getting beat on like a sissy and getting suspended i fought back and got suspended.

im not in any way condoning segragation, but the idea of putting so many differnt kids from so many differnt backgrounds together is what causes alot of the problems. any time you speak of anything your offending someone. if a mexican can were a shirt with a mexican flag on it, why cant i wear a shirt with a confederate flag on it? it has no source of drug or alchol content on it, "but it might offend someone" . high school was the most hate filled place id ever been, 2,000 students and everyone of them knowinly or unknowinly was placed with a cirtain group, whenever ones group acted in an unacceptable way all of them was punished as a group.

for the statement about the playstaion, id much rather have my child at home playing video games, then being out some where in this screwd up world being looked apon as prey by a child moliester.

you guys had it much better. if i had the choice id go back in time and growup in the america of yesteryears.

Anyone see Penn and Teller's show Bull**** before? They did an episode on how college was just that. Sadly, it's completely accurate. If you're interested in seeing it, send me a PM for a link. It's on Google Video, but I won't post a link here because it has some language.

You're a clean cut white kid. That's the problem.

I truly sorry if anyone dose get offended by this, but lets face it racism is over, and has been for a while.

Have you ever seen any person hate a black person SOULY becuase of there skin color....i dont know about you, but sence 1990 till now, my entire life never seen somone seriously hate somone cuase there skin is a different color.
People get made fun of for looking stupid, (nerds, geeks, obese, what have you) but for some reason that is not as serious as exclaiming the n-word, even if you are joking. Speaking of joke, IMHO racisim today is a joke, its a scam for minoritys to make free money, get catered too, and so on.....i doubt there even one person in the country that hates a black person ONLY for there skin color and nothing else un-relalated to actions.

Seems like doing anything to/or directed to a minority they dont like, is seriously considered racsim today.....its getting out of hand

Most of us were for the most part, not invovled with segrigation, so why is it that were still blamed for it. Why are we blamed for it at all???
As far as I know, my family has NO roots to slave traders/owners...my dad is 2nd generation italiain, and my moms side comes from england, so why is it that by blacks would i get looked at as racist if i dont really feel guilty nor really care about slavery? See, i think there more racist then us, nowa days anway

well, that is my honest opinion,

listen if anyone really dose think im racist or trying to convey an anit-black atomshpere.......just let it go.....apparently you didnt get my piont , and most likley will never get it...

i find it strange that my step-sister has to wear an ID badge around in high school all day yet in the military on the base i didn't have to ever wear one unless i was on the "lower" base operation side with the nuke subs. something tells me there is something wrong with that.

college to me is a great thing, i am still debating about it right this second, i have the money to go, but don't know what for to major in right now. i have a job also(as soon as my medical stuff clears up) that pays upwards $38 an hour, but requires traveling all the time(state to state driving, southeast region)

then i look at my friends wife who has a business degree and she could only find a job for $15 an hour being a head secratary for a land survey company.

to me networking is crucial now days, its more who you know than what you know.

you don't need alot of money to live on and have fun, heck, i been on vacation for 8 months now, and gots a 2004 truck, that was savings off of military pay. its not how much you make(to a certain point) its what you do with your money that counts.

i read a story about cost of housing in florida once, the family they were talking about moved from up north to there, the lady accepted "a better position" teaching at a university, for $46k!!!!! and she had a doctorates in education!!!! obvoisly she doesn't know how to use her eduction skills, and doesn't know how to research that $46k a year isn't going to buy much of a house in florida(orlando)

then the oppisite end is the guy who can only find temp jobs forever because he doesn't have a degree, nor the money to get one.

so, i am telling you all, network network network, its all about that.

what was the orginal thread about anyways?!?!?!?!

FordFXfour87,

After being in college and working jobs that require no degree and those that do, it is painfully obvious that it is well worth it. Im not saying college is for everyone, but if youre turning it away because its a headache or its 'hard', then that is foolish. If it was easy, everyone would do it. It can be the difference between a job that gets you by, and a job that gets you whatever you want. Just for an example....do what you are doing, and you can fix HVAC systems. Go to college, and you could DESIGN them, in a cush office, making 3 times what you would just fixing them. You sound a lot like i was at that age...go do something easy and make good money. While in college i started working for 8/hr, that sucked, found something for 13.50/hr. After i graduated, i started demanding better. I got to the point where a job offer for 25/hr was only OK, but just barely. I ended up not getting paid by the hour at all....which is what i wanted, and i have no regrets, i ended up doing something i love, and when i look back, i KNOW i absoultely got everything i thought i was entitled to and more....

This is not everyone's path, but in case you hadnt seen it from that perspective, figured id throw it out.

Well, this is supposed to be "the good old days", but has morphed into education commentary.

First, imo, it's ok to think A LITTLE about the good old days. Fact is, today is where we live, so take advantage of what's here now. There is plenty.

On education: Many on this site talk about the decline of the US and the US auto industry. OK. What is the solution? Protectionism and isolationism come up a lot. Someone said racism is over--read some of those isolationist posts, would ya?

Well, here's an idea:

If you or your children want to live in a world-leading country and help recover the standing that US manufacturers once had, then here is what you MUST do: Study. Math, science, chemisty, physics. GO TO COLLEGE and major in math, science, engineering, chemistry, physics. HARD SCIENCE, not basket weaving. At the minimum, prepare yourself for management, which would mean accounting and business classes.

Trades are fine and are needed, and it's fine to persue that path. But it isn't going to move the country up the global ladder.

College is little more than a peice of paper that says, "See boss, I learn well"
I used to think that too. Now that i have graduated, and working on a masters, its obvious that my BS degree was more than that, it says...

-I learn well
-I have long term goals
-I can acheive them
-I can complete projects on time, without someone holding my hand
-I am willing to take risks to achieve goals, and jump through any hoops pertaining to that goal.
-i am well rounded in the sciences not directly pertaining to my field of study

Now, its not that you can't prove all this to an employer, the difference is, i can prove it in the time it takes to get out my transcript instead of over the course of 20 years.

Back to the orignal post "The good old days"

When I was a kid our guns were sticks and we had to make our own "bang"! We got plenty of excercize and learned social skills needed for life. We were taught to repect adults and knew we were going to eventually answer to a higher authority. We were taught that if we wanted it bad enough, we would have to work for it. Enough said…sorry.
