Have a dead 302, It is in an f150 4wd and has a carb. Besides the standard swap in another carb'd 302 of similiar year. What other years can be swapped if I want to keep the carb. Also looking at going to a 351W. Can I find an efi 302 or 351 and just swap the intake to that motor easily? Or do I need to stick with strictly carb'd engines. The truck is my sons and he doesn't have a fortune to spend on it and he thinks he found a good 351W for it but it is EFI.
Forgot to give info: 83 F150, 302, 4spd, 4wd,
Thanks

Reason: Specs on truck
he can swap in a 351w easily. but the 302 intake will not fit on the motor. But 351w manifolds are easy to come by so that shouldnt be hard or expensive. he will also need to get the proper flywheel. Do not use the 5.0 flywheel on the 351w it will not work properly. he can use the 302's accessorys on the 351w like alt, powersteering etc.. if he is to get the efi 5.8 the front timing cover will need replaced to one that uses a manual fuel pump. the 5.0 one might fit not sure. the distributor will also need to be for a 351w. the 302 one is to short.
its a great swap and cheap , just plan on a few trips to the wrecking yard and ask us if you have any questions
Thanks, I need to find a 351w that has a flywheel for a manual correct? or if I have to get an auto. I will need a 351w manual flywheel. He is looking at a complete motor we just don't know if it a manual or auto
So far he has found one out of a lincoln, but I told him to hold up until we can locate one out of a truck and preferably a manual. I don't feel like swapping manifolds oil pan etc. unless I have to. He is just learning to work on stuff so I will be doing most of the teaching and showing.
O.K. ended up getting a 302 out of an 86 mustang, it's not the HO, and it is a manual. The car had a 5 speed and the truck we are putting it in is a 4 speed. Do we have to switch out the flywheel or will it work on the 4 speed? Also, When I pulled motors before in automatics I found it was easier to pull engine and tranny at once, is this true for a manual also? It looks like I can just unbolt the bell housing at the motor and then hope we can stab it back pretty easy.
couple of more things,
1. The motor has a serpentine pulleys but no belt. does anyone have a diagram for how it goes? It has power steering, a/c, alt, idler pulley, and of course the water pump.
2. How do I know if it has a reverse rotation water pump?
3. If it does have a reverse rotation pump, will my old clutch fan work off the old motor, it had the old v-belt.
Sorry for all the questions, but my son has to be difficult, he wants this truck running yesterday.

An 86 Stang has a reverse rotation water pump, your fan won't work. The pitch on the blades is reversed. Measure the diameter of both flywheels, the Stang one might be smaller and as such won't work with the truck bellhousing. Easiest way to mate the engine to the transmisson, is to take 4 old style, straight shank small block head bolts, cut the heads off ( just behind the head) chamfer the ends smooth and screw these into 4 of the bell housing bolt holes in the block. Now you have block to bellhousing alignment dowels. Set the engine into the bay, align the dowels with the corrosponding holes in the bell, then pop the two together. Works like butter. So easy, one person can install the engine.
Didn't think about using alignment dowels thanks, I'll measure the flywheels tonight. We pulled the old motor out already and have the intake and exhaust manifolds swapped. He is swapping the clutch and flywheel tonight so I'll check the size of each first. Guess I'm going junk yard hunting on the way home.
Thanks for the help, motor is in, the flywheels were the same and for everyones info the clutch fan off a 3.8 is interchangeable with the 302 and 351 as long as they are reverse rotation water pumps when running a serpentine belt. Took the 3 inch body lift off so we have some unmodifing to do..
