I'll try this in here. just bought a 1990 F250 with a 93 351 in it. It runs great except it don't like to idle. I have a leaky exaust that i haven't fixed yet. A guy at work told me if you have a leaky exaust before the muffler which mine is he said the motor don't get enough back pressure and it will idle bad. Is this true? I can't believe the exaust system would make it idle rough. If this is not true what else could it be. Already replaced the EGR control sensor because that's what code poped up.
An exhaust leak before your O2 sensor will in fact effect your idle and your mpg and with the year motor you have I think you have the O2 sensor right before the cat and after your exhaust manifold ties into your y-pipe on the passenger side. Fix the leak and see if that helps if not it might be your IAC
From what i can see i don't have any cat's. 2 pipes come out and run side by side and go the front of the box approx guess and go into a "y" and then go into the muffler. then come out the muffler as 2 pipes. I see a tube that goes into the one pipe before the muffler. I assume that tube has something to do with the pollution control
Idle Air Control and it should be mounted on the side of your throttle body, do you see your O2 sensor and it's location of input into your exhaust system?
remember, I don't think backpressure is what you want. The idea is to give the exhaust VELOCITY and get it out of there as efficiently as possible. A leak may or may not give you problems.
