Took my 03 PSD in for the fuel gauge that will suddenly just drop to empty, drop to half full, not register a full tank after fueling up, you name it. Dealer said he could not fix it, due to non-duplication of the problem. This is the second time this has occurred, the first dealer just replaced the float (I think). How do you get a dealer to repair what truly amounts to an intermittent problem, and has anyone else out there had a similar issue?
believe it or not, i have replaced a bunch of sending units for the same symptoms because of the sulfur in the diesel. if you take the fuel cap off and the tank smells like an old man eating beans, you have your solution.
My 06 w/10,000 did exactly what you described just today. I went to the dealer and they suggested I put in a fuel additive. They claimed some diesel fuel clogs up the sending unit (or whatever it is that sends the information) and the additive may clean it off after a take or two. I'm leaving for Utah tomorrow (I live in CA) so I'll see if the additive does the trick.
Jim, thanks for the info, let me know if it recurs, mine has settled down a bit. Now about every week it will drop a little then return to an accurate mark.
I haven't used any additive yet. The guy at the shop said to use Techron (SP?) or any other additive. I'll be putting on about 1500 miles on this trip. Should be plenty of mileage to get the junk off the sending unit. My idiot light on the dash is on and I'm getting an error message. I'll repost when I get back and let you know if the additive did the trick.
Strange but true. After 3 bottles of Techron and 4 tanks of fuel the idiot light went out and the gauge appears to reading normally. I was at around 1200 miles on my out and back trip when the light went out. The gauge appeared to be working a little prior to the light going out.
OT: 90 MPH on cruise control in the Nevada desert w/head wind got me around 12 to 13 MPH. I've gotten up to 17 or so if I keep it to 70MPH and RPM's at 2grand or under.
Towing a 6800 pound trailer on the way back at 70MPH I got around 9.5 to 10MPH. Going up a fairly steep long grade at 5,000 elevation the truck pulled at 70 MPH. That was max. Very pleased with the truck.
