Had the truck for a year now. First time I went to my cabin in the central sierras with winter storm conditions. Had about 2 feet of new snow over the weekend, plus several feet of old snow.
Truck was great. Auto start worked good. 4WD worked good. 4WD Low worked good. Drove over the mound made by snowplow man, and into my drive. No problem getting in and out. ABS worked fantastic, hit some black ice in a parking lot going about 15 mph as I was breaking and turning, would have taken out a car had the ABS not kicked in, saved me a big headache.
No DIesle issues, but it was only about 28 degrees.......
This truck replaced a land crusier, and this was the main test for me. Very happy.
What elevation is your cabin? Is your truck stock? What year? Stock tires? I probably could've looked at the picture, but perhaps I'm lazy...
I go to Utah often and up to around 8900 feet. I have Nitto Terra Grapplers, 295 75r 16 and am very happy with them so far. Only issue I have had is cruising around 55-60 mph, slight incline, in overdrive I get a stuttering almost like fuel starve on a gasoline engine. Makes a funny sound too, like whup-whup-whup-whup and the truck shakes like it is missing. Only solution I have found is to put it in 3rd gear at the bottom of the incline. But when I forget, I get the exact same symptom almost in the exact same place every time I go up. It quits immediately upon downshifting.
Almost never have to use 4lo except if I have a trailer and I'm stuck in the snow. Only have had to dig out twice, and it wasn't too bad. My fault for stopping.
these trucks are awsome in snow .no way around. this my 2nd winter with mine in new jerseys snow belt.in fact the ski area is built into the mountain i live on top off.
never had a problem getting in and out or up and down the mountain and the grade is 25% so it can be rough at times. no where like you guys out in the mid west. just all my fords have been winter time great.
good luck with yous hazard

Cabin is at 5500 feet. I drove up to about 7k though and it was nice. Truck is completely stock, with the 17 inch tires. Have a leer cap. 2005 Lariat 4x4 PSD.

i agree! these trucks are good in the snow, way more than i ever thought. i got caught up in hays, KS during that blizzard in early dec, all of I-70 was closed, after spending the night in the truck, the next day the highway was still closed so went south on an ice/snow covered road to garden city, the truck did great! just has the stock michelins on it.
then on the way back from that same trip, ran into a snow storm in salt lake city, the truck did excellent there also!
i must say, the handleing is better than my old 1995 f350 for some reason.

please don't talk about ks. i got stuck out there one time in my semi truck. only just out side of hays.we could turn around and back east but west to mile high forgetaboutit..3 days near a truck stop. we had to walk and carry fuel back to keep the big cat running and warm. i still have photos here where you can almost make out the road signs from the drifting snow. wind from the south that storm.
Last week i drove from Houston to Steamboat, CO and drove through the three mountain passes in a snow storm. the truck did great, and the temerature got down to 9 degrees at times. I did not have any problems except when i had the truck in towl/haul mode and i hit some ice while braking . The truck started to slide a little and while i was sliding, the transmission downshifted really hard, and it kind of worried me a little. Other than that the truck held up great through the 75 degree drop in temp that occured over the course of 6 hours. - BLake
I agree, i had my truck in a snowstorm this weekend. It was up Mt Lemmon at 9,000 ft and the truck was awesome. There were several accidents but people were driving past signs that said 4x4 or chains only. I was impressed I'll have to post my pics.
Hays, KS must be the black hole. I used to have a 1995 F-150, 5 speed and while puling a 6x8 Uhaul trailer heading east from Denver, the slave cylinder went out about 80 miles west of Hays. I managed to get a rolling start down an on ramp and made it to Hays where their Ford stealership screwed me.
Hey Customz, good to see another Tucsonan on here. Mt. Lemmon's a nightmare in the winter. The FD I work for goes up there 5, sometimes 6 times a day at the first sight of snow. Most people in this region have no idea how to drive in those conditions.
What can I say, we're desert dwellers. We're used to it being 110 degrees
Have a good one,
Jay
