earlybroncoboy- the 302 is NOT a bored out 289. Different crank, rods and pistons. Plus, the 302 block is different, mainly where the bottoms of the cylinders were extended to provide additional piston support at Bottom Dead Center. The 289 heads had 1.67/1.45 valves and 54.5 cc combustion chambers from 63-67. In 68 they had 63 cc comb. chambers with same valves. The 63 HIPO had 49.2 cc comb. chambers with 1.67/1.45 valves, and the HIPO 64-67 had 54.5 cc cmb chambers with 1.78/1.45 valves. The 302 valves were all 1.78/1.45 from 68-87 with 53.5, 58.2, 63, and 69 cc comb. chambers. This excludes the Boss, which was a totally different animal.
Ford made the 302 from 1967/1968 to 1996 and the 351 from 1969 TO 1996 so there are plenty of them around.
The 289/302/351 all share the same bell housing so you do not have to change andy dirve train when swaping between these motors. I would expect that the 289 is good for around 370 ft/lbs of torque and 285-312 hp on pump gas 87, the 302 390 292-321 hp, the 351 450 ft/lbs and 324-347 hp.
If you decide to go with a crate motor that is a good way to go, people are happy with them.
If your interested in advice to build a good offroad motor-
I would find a low mile or new 351 W preferably around 1995-1996 so it is fresher. I would get a weiand/holley/edlebrock dual plane with the carburater of choict arond 450-650 cfm. Affordable long tube headers that reasonably fit along with an rv cam with around 110 lobe seperation and 250/260 duturation. Stock ports with a light polish can help a little. You will need an ignition module an coil that will work with carburated, and I like duraspark dizzy with MSD 6A module but you may like another better.
I am at the start of a 302 build for my scout and I expect to get decent low end torque as I am building it to above specs.
Or you may prefer a roller motor with valves that snap open fast and stay there all day- they run good.
sorry guys it has been so long since replied I just haven't been around... I have finished my motor. I did not buy a crate motor I bought a 302 block and went from their. It rums good and I couldn't be more pleased!!!!!
