Power Window Question

I am having trouble with the power windows on my 86 F-150, 60,000 actual miles. The driver's side window runs but the gears slip and the window won't go up without helping to lift it manually. The passender side window when put all the way down jambs and won't come back up. With the panel off, if you start it up the first inch manually, it will come on up. I believe the teeth on the gear behind the motor are loose and getting out of alignment???

Do any of you have experience with this type problem? Do I need to cut the 4 rivets off the door to remove the motors to fix this? If I do, do I replace the rivies with nuts and bolts or re-rivet?

Any way to tighten or shim or adjust the linkage in the back of the motor without cutting rivets?

Can anyone email me a schematic of the window motor and mechanism?

Thanks for any and all advice!

The gear inside is nylon, and yes, they wear out. My problem was once I dropped in a new gear at $30 or so, the motor went about a year later. I ended up with a NAPA rebuilt setup and it has worked fine for over 5 years (the rebuilds come with a new gear anyway). The rebuild was roughly $10 more than the gear through Ford (I don't know of any other place to get the gear).

I remember cutting rivits and replacing them with bolts, but I don't think mine had 4 rivits...I think I had 3 bolts, 1 rivit (and I know the history of the truck, Dad owned it since new), but who cares...yes replace it with bolts. I believe the rebuid comes with the bolts also.

I've never done this job before. Do I block up the window with a wooden block, cut out the rivets, remove the motor with gear and replace?

Or, do I have to disassemble the window and linkage arms, etc.

I can tell you that the motor and arms come out in 1 peice. The window isn't hard to remove, you just take out the vent window assembly (it forms the front channel). There are screws under the door panel, and some in the top door jamb/frame. You have the window at the lowest setting to remove the vent (tilt it back them pull it out). I don't think I removed the window to change the motor...almost positive I didn't.

You don't have to go through a lot of trouble to get the motor out. With the door panel off, you can see 3 dimples in the sheet metal around the motor. I use a spot weld cutter or a 7/16" drill bit to drill these dimples out. Now a 5/16" (1/4"drive) fits through the hole and on to the bolts (3) holding the motor in. Use some duct tape to keep the window up. Usually the 3 nylon rollers go inside a simple repair just make sure to clean out old stuff. "HELP" section of parts stores are starting to stock these. I did my 86 twice, the first time with used parts, 2nd with new, going on 4yrs now. Car motors will also fit if you get the right side. Notice that the part no on case is a "C5AZ" I think, going back to 1965, The motors in the cars go to 91, not sure how far in the trucks. I also think there was a thread on this problem a while ago. Good luck, George

Yeah, you can also get nuts from a hardware store and stick them in. THats what i did. Worked perfectly, but i'd say if they have them availible at the parts store go there. You can just drill the dimples like mentioned above and unbolt the motor from the regulator. Then unplug the wiring harness and pull the motor out. take the motor apart and you'll see what we're talking about. I got lucky when i was looking for new doors and got new window motors with them.

ALso, if your looking for junkyard motors, the ones from car's work, but the sides are different. Like the right motor from a car will fit the LEFT motor from a truck, and the left motor for a car will fit the RIGHT motor for a truck i believe. The ones i got from a junkyard were rather slow...., i'd almost buy new ones if i were you. The ones i have in my truck now are a night and day difference from the ones i got from the junkyard. Actually technically i got both of them from a junkyard, just goes to show you that you can get some bad ones and some good ones. I think i got lucky on mine though. From a 92 F150 i think.

I have several of the gears and several motors with the gear already mounted.I will be more than happy to hook you up with a good one at no charge.I parted out several of these last summer and have alot remaining. If you pay the shipping, about $6 bucks for a motor with gear mounted I will ship one to your front door or if you just want the gear then just $2 bucks for shipping.I tested each and every motor prior to removing them so they are all work fine.Hope this helps.

hello!

You mentioned that you had gears for 1986 F-150 power windows in a post last year. I have finally gotten one apart and seen what I need. Do you still have 2 or the gears you are willing to part with? Both sides have gone now. If so, my email is: petvetdoc @ aol.com

Let me know how much shipping is and your address and I will send you the money. Thanks!

Please let me know if you don't have them anymore also. Thanks

D0AZ-62234A24-B .. P/W Gear Kit .. Fits everything Ford from 1970 thru at least 1995.

Pay NO attention to the C5AR casting number on these motors. All that means is that particular part was first cast in 1965.
