drive shaft
was working on my buddies 99 f150 2wd today and noticed he has a smaller dia. drive shaft than i do also his is steel and mine is aluminum........whats up with this? Both of us are original owners of our trucks and have not changed shafts....also both trucks are 4.6L autos

As far as the different materials, I do not know why they are different. Steel has a higher strength than aluminum in terms of area. Better said a 1" square bar of steel will be stronger than the same size aluminum. Aluminum is stronger than steel in terms of weight. (a 1 lb. bar of aluminum is stronger than a 1 lb. bar of steel) The driveshafts may have the same strength, but the AL shaft has to be bigger to get that same rating. (it would probally be lighter though)
