Better to massage a 351w. 5.4 might be too wide to fit without surgery of some kind. And yes, you will need at least the trans that fits the 5.4 motor.
The reason I'd like the 5.4L is for the supercharger I'd like to put in it. If you think about it, the 5.4L is small than the 351w, so in theory shouldn't it fit?
the 5.4 is a bigger motor then the 5.8 due to being overhead camed ect... there is a guy that put on into a 78 bronco along with the dash from the same wrecked truck. looks sweet but it took him at least 6mnths to pull it off. i know its floating around the net so try a search.
but like said above going to a 5.8 would be the easier option, then supercharging that with KenneBell which is vary similar to what the 5.4's run would get you the same result
Well I'm obviously not looking for something that can do 11s or anything like that. I'd like to have some nice take offs, but also I've been thinking about getting into off roading. I've never taken the bronco out, but I went in a friends jeep the other day, and it was pretty fun.
As far as reasons for supercharging? More of a reason for more horsepower, and because i can, I guess. The reason I mentioned the 5.4, is because I'd heard good things about superchargers and these engines.
Any motor can be built for a supercharger... you really can't just slap a supercharger on a motor and call it good... it'll last for a while before you blow a head gasket or crack the exhaust manifolds... The realtively low compression of the stock 5.0 in your truck is ideal for the supercharger, but the cast pistons used in that motor probably won't take that abuse for very long...
I know there are many people that do just slap on a supercharger, but if your going to go through all that work, why not do it right the first time?
Find a donor 351w so it will bolt into your engine bay with little/no mods. Build it up to be a nice motor leaning toward the torque side for your large vehicle. It will run nice all the time and have good trail manners too. When it's done, pull the 5.0 and drop in the 351 with it's associated components. Just currious to know, what $$ is in your budget?
Depending on how bad the cylinders and heads are you can have ~$2k in just the machine shop work. This is before new pistons, and cam, lifters, rings, etc. When we looked at rebuilding the V6 in my malibu it was going to cost us $800 just to bore the block.
