my 352is hooped and will need a total rebuild to be reliable. This weekend i found a 1969 Mercury 428 with a C6. This is out of a Mercury Meteor that was t-boned. It has 114,000 miles or kilometers. i dont know what the odemeter was reading. it has a 4 barrel that has been rebuilt. has the merc valve covers and breathing tube. they are asking $2000. plus tax. does this sound right? i need to know as soon as possible as the guy is only giving me a couple of days to decide. he wont take anything off for the tranny if i dont want it so i am going to take that to hopefully get a bit better mileage. i am going to get a quote for rebuilding my 352 as a 390 tommorrow. I just want to know if this price sounds reasonable. thanks guys.
Did he crank it up for you to hear it run. Do you have all the numbers off of it for us to check it out to see if it is indeed a 428. Get the vin # off the door of the car to see if in fact it came in that car. $2000.00 For a GOOD running 428 sounds fair to me with a good C6 but it sounds HIGH if its worn out or I couldnt hear it run first. It would be worth it to rig up some form of test stand. If it runs smooth, with solid compression on all 8 cylinders, then it's worth the $2k with the C6... In my opinion. But if it's a leaky rattletrap with blow-by, then you might want to pass on it. Although, the 428 block and crank can fetch good money by themselves.
I guess with a starter and 12v you could check compression, no?

i have to do my negotiating over the phone. the guys are pretty honest.the car was in beauftiful condidtion for how old it was. the intereior was definetly original and looked nice.
JMO but if it was me I'd pull the intake and heads and measure the bore and stroke and pull the oil pan and get the numbers off of the crank. If he wont let you then ether count on a complete rebuild if you really want it, gamble on it like it is or walk off. You will get a lot more advice in the morning so hang around since you have a few days to decide. Let us know what you do. Good luck, Charles
If you can take the C6 off the engine so you can see the rear of the engine block the 428's came with a crude sandscratch letter on the back. The "A" in most cases was for a std 428 block and the "C" in most cases the 428CJ. If it's a 69 engine it should have either the "A or C" sandscratch. Also the date codes will verify what year it is. You can also drop the oilpan and look for a "IU or IUB" on the crank for a 428. The SCJ used a "IUA" crank with the cookie cutter crank spacer behind the balancer. The blocks casting number will be meaningless in this case. I'd be certain it's a 428 before any cash changes hands. This site has some really good info on parts ID. Although it mainly applys to the CJ and SCJ it will give you an idea what and where to look for things. www.428cobrajet.org Scroll down to component ID click on it. You'll see a list of engine parts and most have pics and casting numbers. The "block" section shows the "A and C" sandscratch on the rear of the block.
the motr has 114000 miles. The company will not give me a warranty but the owner says he will not sell garbage and he has heard the motor run. this is what he said-
. The mileage is in miles not Kms. I have heard the engine run and there was no obvious knocking noises or expensive sounds. There was a bit of lifter noise which I suspect would quiet down after some running. The engine started right up and ran smoothly on all 8.
The engine is available without the valve covers if you didn't want them. Mercury covers are fairly rare
what do you guys think? It is $2000 Canadian for the motor and a c6 tranny? asap if possible
$2k (US) is about the cost for having a long block 390 rebuild. If you want the 428, it sounds like a good deal to me. You are going to put some money into it anyway. Don't stress and go for what you want.

Unless..... anyone have a 390 crank laying around.lol. but i thank you for your help.
Tell that "mechanic" to use his own rectum as a chimny not yours and stick with Chebbie's or International Scouts on his stupid wrist pin opinion.
I'll bet he'll snag that motor and make a buck off your loss.

Yep, 428 pistons break if you insist on turning the stock cast pistons to 7000 rpm . Otherwise the motors are bullet proof. The mechanic know how to screw you and nothing about 428s.

7000 rpm was a trick I learned to take money from with the peanut gallery. I would then rev my CJ to 7k in first and second gear. Of course when the piston let go, it cost me way more than I ever won on the bets. The rod all but cut the block in half. I salvaged the heads, 6 rods and believe it or not the crank. Even back then CJ blocks were expensive.
