Big problem

Please help me I have a 1988 ford f250 7.3 diesel, that would drive about 40 miles and then just shut off and after allot of cranking it would start up again and drive about 1/4 of a mile before it would shut off again and then the next day it would drive another 40 miles and do the same thing. And then today I took it out and all of a sudden it stared blowing out blueish white smoke and would only do about 12 miles an hour with my foot on the floor. Its got a new fuel filter, returnlines and caps, glowplugs, air filter, orings, the lift pump has about 3k miles on it and the tanks are full! Please anyone help me I haft to drive the chevy!

Are you losing coolant?
How many miles on the engine?
Have you serviced the CDR valve?

It almost sounds like brain box problems, but I don't think those trucks had any kind of brain box.

No computers in an 88, so that isnt the problem.

Thanks for the replyes, its not loosing coolent, but I havent replaced the CDR valve and it only has 150,000 on the engine. One thing I did notice is 2 little tips off the ends of the glowpluges where missing (cheep glowplugs?) so now Im going to pull the heads off to retreve them and check for damage. Could the lift pump be bad and the IP pump is just sucking up what little fuel it can? Because now it will run but very poorly at 10mph stalling and smoking like it was runing out of fuel and I allready checked the pickup tubes and there not broken, I guess Ill check the lift pump for pressure. Thanks.

Check to see if your getting air in the lines, then the lift pump, most likely its the ip, start with the simple stuff first

Put the clear hose on the #1 injector to filter header line with a curl in it, then do the same at the IP return line to #2 injector or where ever yours goes. There will be some air bubbles (very small) but after running the engine for 1-2 minutes at say 2500 rpm the lines should be clear of major air bubbles. Now if air bubbles appear the direction of flow will tell you where the leak is from when the engine is shut off.
