I was replacing my glowplugs and noticed that 2 of them where missing the tips. I think they must have been cheep glowplugs, any tricks for retreving them besides taking off the head or what type of damage they will do?
Do the ends of the plug look like they have broken recently. (i.e. is there some shinny metal or is it all carboned up and black?
If there is shinny metal or the break looks fresh then the tips may have broken as you pulled them out. That is bad news as the tips are either stuck in the hole or fell into the cylinder.
If the ends are all carboned up then maybe the cylinders have passed the tips already. Check the holes to see if any tips are stuck in the hole. Turn the motor by hand with a socket to see if it starts binding as the piston approaches Top dead center. Don't force it.
Some guys have successfully retrieved tips thru the injector hole with a magnet by removing the fuel injector.
Don't crank or try to start the motor until you are positive that the old glow plug tips have been removed from the hole or cylinder.
Lots of information on this Forum regarding the topic of broken tips on glowplugs.
Are you saying the complete tip is gone, if there is no tip in the hole and the GP shows no new/broken metal then maybe the timing was so far off it burned the tips off.
I would however use extreme caution and try to ascertain if the tips are in the engine before using the starter to crank it over.
Unfortunitly the truck had alredy been run by the time it was noticed, I think the timing was off alittle causing the tips to burn off because some of the other tips where distorted. Id say mybe an 8th if an inch off the tip was missing.
