First let me say I have been reading this site for some time now and am quite impressed with the info and advice. Now it's my turn for a question.
I have a 2003 excursion w/ 6.0 and 2wd. About 10% of the time when I use the remote to unlock the doors, the running board lights and interior lights do not come on, the interior lights will not come on using the dash switch either untill I insert and turn the key to the on position then all will work fine. Also a couple times when this has happened the dash indicator lights would not come on and the power windows will not operate when turning the key on but all will work fine after starting the engine. I have left it at the dealer for repair but it would not malfunction for them so they could not fix what they can't find. Thanks in advance for any response
HEY OUT THERE! With all the electrical related problems with excursions I am surprised no one else has experienced a simular problem as mine.
Is there a central connection or relay that supplies power to this area that I could check?
It acts as though it may be a bad connection in the low voltage circuit and when the key is turned to the on position it causes enough draw to make contact. Does that make sense?
I have a very similar problem with an aftermarket alarm I had installed on my F-250. If I used the remote and opened the doors within 5 seconds, the interior lights wouldn't come, the doors wouldn't pop to unlock until I cycled the key to 'ON'.
However, if I waited longer than 10 seconds after using the remote, the interior lights would come on and the doors would unlock like they're supposed to.
I've searched high and low, everything on my alarm install is correct (verified by 3 alarm shops here), and there are a few reports that I've read commenting that the '02-'03 model years have a slightly different stock security module that can cause problems.
I'm still looking for a positive answer just like you!!
It seems to me that if the battery saver has activated, then when you unlock with the remote the lights do not come on. Perhaps some door sensor is failing to indicate closed or an add on circuit is causing the problem.
Thanks for the info, I had the ex at the dealer today for VGT solenoid issues so while it was there they of course could not get the electrical system to malfunction to diagnose.
I did request a copy of the wiring diagram and received a few pages. One page shows power from the central junction box ( hot at all times ) that feeds the battery saver relay which then feeds the main light switch, the glove box light, the engine comp. light, all door entry lights, running board lights, vanity lights and map lights. All these lights are part of the problem. Another feed ( hot at all times ) feeds the instrument cluster but I did not receive the complete diagram for that, but when the problem occurs the dash indicator lights do not function either.
Now I have a direction to go when I have the time, probably this weekend.
I will let you know what's going on as I find out.
Thanks again, David
Ok, The problem has been solved. I had to have the drivers door power lock replaced so while they had the ex I told them about my electrical situation. The mechanic seemed knowledgeable enough and agreed to my thoughts of the battery saver relay being the problem. A few days later the service writer calls and says all is fixed, they determined it was the GEM module. So I pick up the ex and 2 days later no interior lights when opening the doors. I also went on a short 500 mile road trip that weekend and my wife locked the keys inside while hiking which is not a problem with the keyless entry, EXCEPT when they changed the GEM module they failed to tell me my door code was changed. Luckily a locksmith was there in 30 minutes.
Any way I took the ex back to them and they decided to replace the gauge cluster with the battery saver relay and all is working (been about 3 weeks)
Also they agreed to only charge for the parts on my second time since they were wrong the first time and for the code number problem.
Sorry for the long post but no one was ever interested in attempting to fix this problem before.
Hope this info helps someone else.
No about the radio staying on. When the problem would occur was when the vehicle was shut off, locked or not didn't matter. If locked the remote lock control would function correctly and unlock the doors but the courtesy lights would not come on about 10% of the time until inserting the key and turning to the start position. Some times turning on the headlights would cause the courtesty lights to function correctly also then all would work fine for maybe the next 10 or so times of entering the vehicle. Also occasionally (not as often as the lights problem) when starting the engine upon turning the key to the on position to wait for the wait to start indicator to go out, none of the gauges or dash indicator lights would opperate. If I would wait the normal 10 - 15 seconds with the key on then start the engine the gauges, indicator lights, climate control, windows, overhead readout and interior lights all would fail to work but if I would just turn on the headlights then everything would just click on. I kept telling the dealer it was the battery saver relay but they would never believe me and it would never malfunction for them. Basically they weren't the least bit quallified to trouble shoot the problem. If they can't plug in their scanner and read a code they don't have a clue.
Hope this loooooong post helps you.
thanks home works. it seems our problem is a little different but the same. With the vehicle off the remote lock will unlock properly but the lights will not flash and the dome light not come on. When i get in and turn the key everything works properly. Now when i turn off the vehicle the dome light lights but the radio stays on even when i open the doors and the windows will still work. thanks again
