I recently bought my 95 from a guy I work with and he just spent $1500 on a trans rebuild before I bought it and I talked him down to a decent price and bought it.It seems to take forever to shift into second and when it does it is a pretty hard shift, then it will quickly hard shift into third. It is a 2.3 auto. The guy I bought it from said it shifted hard before the rebuild and he just lived with it.Did someone do a shabby rebuild or could something else cause this?Any help would be appreciated and this is my first Ranger and I am new to FTE.
My '99 with 4 cyl. and 4R44 does the same thing. Has a "Ford remanufactured" transmission in it and dealership says everything checks ok--no codes. Hope someone knows what's wrong.
Good idea Stan! Take it by your local AZ and get the codes pulled. They'll even tell you what the codes are. If they are halfway intelligent, they'll tell you how to fix it. I had a code that the guy completely steered me wrong on through $150 of replacement parts. Needless to say, I was not very happy, lol.
My check engine light is on but just got the truck and I have not had it scanned yet.Maybe some sensor or something?
I'm betting on a bad shift solenoid of some sort, especially if you are getting decent shift into the other gears, which a speed senor or VSS would not really allow for...that I know of.
I talked with previous owner of my 95 today at work about paperwork for the trans rebuild he had done before I bought it.He said he is almost positive it has a 12000 mile warranty. He is not very clear on what was involved with the rebuild, other than costing $1500.I have heard that alot of times they put a shift kit in when they rebuild a tranny.Could that possibly be the reason for the extra "firm" shifts that I am getting? Still need to get it scanned but been pretty busy lately. Is it common to install shift kit on rebuild of 4r44e and any way to tell visibly without getting in to deep in the trans? Thanks.
Is there a way to reprogram the shift point to a lower speed? On mine, the shift occurs at about 25 mph on light acceleration and then almost immediately shifts to third. But, on harder acceleration it seems to shift normally. Shifts other than 1-2 or 2-1 are smooth and in proper range. I never get a CEL and I have scanned for codes several times and none show up. The dealer (supposedly) replaced the 1-2 solenoid, valve body gasket, a spring, some o-rings and fluid and says everything is fine. I disconnected the battery overnight to force the computer into the learn mode but nothing seems to have changed.
Shift kits are not usually installed during a rebuild unless the owner had requested it. But then again it may depend on the shop. Three of the shops I have had dealings with don't automatically put in a shift kit unless it is asked for. It may be indicated in the rebuild paperwork if a shift kit was installed or not. The kit will make the shifts extra firm. The shift kit is part of the internal workings of the transmission and cannot be seen from the outside of the case. Some types of kits use different springs and valves, others use a modified valve body to replace the standard valve body. Up until the mid to later 90's all transmissions were shift controlled by mechanical linkage from the carburator or throttle body to the trans. Since then the shift points have been controlled by a computer.
Thanks for the info Rangerman Stan.I will review the paperwork to see if shift kit was installed or not.Piffery1 posted a good question pertaining to reprogramming the shift points to a lower speed and am looking forward to any replies on that issue because mine has the same symptoms shifting from 1-2 at about 25 MPH. and immediately shifting into 3rd.
Even if the kit isn't listed on the paperwork, it's possible they put one in. But anyway, they should be able to help with the shifting problem and get it fixed right by reprograming it or making an adjustment. You may need to let them take it around the block or go with you to see what it's doing.
Okay guys,I took my Ranger to my local AZ here in Monroe,Michigan today and had them scan for codes and the only code that came up was a purge valve, something to do with the gas line.I thought for sure that a VSS would show up.Also, for some reason or another my truck does not seem to shift hard like it used to.Kinda strange,eh?It seems to shift like it should and I have no idea why it "fixed" itself.Any SE Michigan members out there?
My 99 ranger shifts hard the first and maybe the second time it shifts up to 2nd then it works perfect until it sit's and totally cools off again. I was thinking that maybe my filter is clogged but then when the fluid warms/get's flowing/thin's out that it flows better. I'll try disconnecting my battery for the learn process theory. Any other ideas? The last tranny that was in this truck blew out 2nd gear, and this tranny is a low mileage one from a junk yard.
