My girlfriends '99 Ranger has a light burned out, its the one behind the fuel guage. It's a stripped short cab ranger, it doesn't have a tach. What all is involved in changing this light bulb?
Thanks.
Sometimes you can get away with just pulling the lower trim panel and knee bolster off and hoping you pick the correct light to replace. Then, get someone with small hands to try and get the bulb out and back in. I've did it this way before. Depending on which light is burned out, this may not be possible.
Now for the hard way. You must pull the instrument cluster which goes something like this (going from memory):
1.) Unhook negative battery cable
2.) Pull and unplug radio
3.) Pull Center Trim panel (the black panel surrounding the radio), unplug cig. lighter
4.) Pull Lower trim panel (underneath steering column)
5.) Pull Knee Bolster (steel behind lower trim panel)
6.) Pull the panel surrounding the instrument cluster, (hopefully it's got tilt, makes things easier). Optional at this point is to unhook the headlight switch.
7.) Now you can pull the cluster out and replace the bulbs.
Installation is the same as above, just backwards.
Yep, 95+ would be different. It has a different cluster. zman764's GF and I have the eact same trucks, lol. I went through that whole ordeal not too long ago. Boy am I glad I didn't have to take out all that stuff to do it.
I used to have a 99 ranger, and one time just takin that stuff apart for fun (I was about 15 or 16) I was pretty sure it was just the 3 bolt screws, but this was 3 or 4 years ago. But the million dollar question, does autozone sell the right light bulb? Or is it like the light in my 4x4 switch on the f150, must order a new switch from ford to get the light.?
Yeah AZ will have the bulb. It's a 194 I think, double check before buying it though!
EDIT: and my two cents, if you're gonna get in there, go ahead and replace them all, so you don't have to get in there again anytime soon!
Great! Wouldn't be to fun to have the dash apart and the guage cluster hangin out just to find I have to wait a week for the dealer to order the bulb :P
Thanks ya'll!
Oh yeah, whats the point in unhooking the negative terminal? Just to have a break in the circuit or something. I don't really know much about electricity.
Just in case you manage to ground yourself out. Some people can handle 12v DC and others it can kill, lol. It all depends on the situation. It'd just be better safe than sorry.
Oh !!! I wouldn't stand for that! Lol, that's way too much work. Another reason that I love my 99!! (not a whole bunch right now, I'm ab to replace the timing belt, haha)
12 v DC could kill? I thought it took a good 110 - 220 ac to do any real damage.
Hey tiggie how does the cruise work with a manual tranny? When your goin up hill and need to drop out of over drive, does the cruise let off the gas when u mash the clutch in or hows it work?
