Can the starters interchange among different engine displacements and years, and automatic vs standard? while we are at it, will FE starters interchange with any other Ford V8, such as the 385 series, 302/351, etc Thanks
There are two different starter. Early FE's had a different count for teeth on the flywheel than later ones did. So there are two different bendix' on starters with different tooth counts. The starters bolt up the same but make one he!! of a noise when you crank them with the wrong number of teeth
Do you know when the change took place on the starters?
I think that the change came about 1965, a least for the Galaxies, my 64 Galaxie used the old stile and when I put in a 66 Fairlane engine it had the newer type.

I concur !!! We've had this discussion before
I don't know if I had the wrong one in a box, but I used an Arco Marine starter for a 460, or so I thought. Now, I wonder if it was for a Marine 427.
But it had the right tooth count and three-bolt pattern and worked like a charm for a long, LONG time...
