I need some help I have a 76 ford f-150 automatic. The problem is in the colem shifter. when i put in park it will jump into reverse if you dont put the emergency brake on? The little locking piece is broke. were can i get another one a new one
Try looking at your shift linkage. Sometimes (especially in older trucks) rocks or debris will strike your linkage system and bend the rods that make it up. With these bent like that it will cause your linkage to shorten and in effect, make it jump out of park. Usually straightening your linkage only requires a little muscle and a pair of channel locks. P.S. I'd also get that park lock just in case.
I have had the same problem with my C6...heres what to do ......ditch the old column shifter and put a floor shifter (B&M), my f150 almost rolled over me when I was fidgiting with the linkage ..I was having to re tighten the linkage every week or so . Its much more fun and safer too with the reverse lockout and no missed gear changes when showing off....
Geeze!!! Fix the problem, save a huge hassle and don't install the floor shifter. If the problem is in the shift collar on the top of the column (worn or broken), get one from the bone yard. The hardest part about this deal is pulling the steering wheel. Take this opportunity to lube the TS switch, replace the horn brush and inspect the upper steering column bearing. Be very careful not to damage the neutral start/backup light finger. These are a pain to replace. Inspecting for sloppy or bent linkage is good advice, take it! If the parking pawl is broken you will have to wait until you overhaul the transmission. I would like to have a beer for every floor pan I have repaired or replaced after someone hacked in a floor shifter. OKAY! story time ...I'll keep it short, gotta have my coffee (John). The PO of my old bug installed a floor shifter (B&M), this interfered with the bench seat, no problem! install bucket seats, these interfered with the steering wheel, so Mr. ergonomically challenged installed a small diameter wheel. Being a little guy and not having power steering he could no longer drive the truck...so he sold it. Lucky for me.
