Just finished putting in the lift and new tires & wheels and figured Id share a few pics. Time to build the bank account back up a bit. Theres a couple more in my gallery....what do ya think?
WOW, that looks great! It looks a lot like mine. There are a bunch of reg cab 70's trucks around, but supercabs are rare. I know of 1 other supercab 4x4 around here, and its been sitting in a guys driveway for about 10 years. Great Job!! I'm getting ready to subtract from my bank account with some goodies for mine. Mike
Thanks Mike, looks like you have one to be proud of yourself. I just picked this one up a couple months ago from a member here. Ive been searching for one that was clean for a few years so you are correct....rare. Up here in the N.E. the salt kills them, I dont know of any around here unless they were totally redone. Seems all the good ones are way down south or out west which is where this one was originally from (Wa). This one wont get ruined up here, in a few months its moving with me to NC. So many plans, just wish I could locate one of those money trees I keep hearing about...LoL.
Looks great guys! Gives me something to shoot for. I removed my steering gearbox this last week to replace all the seals. I'm almost done with that project, next will be collecting parts to replace both axles, lift it and replace the transmission with my NP435 / NP205 / overdrive. I found what is possibly a Dana 70 (owner wasn't sure over the phone) for sale locally and hopefully will be picking that up this week. Thanks again for the insperation.
Both of those trucks look good. So what setups did you guys go with? Full system with leafs front and rear? Leafs front..... blocks in the back.....? What about the steering corrections? What gears are you running? I'm hoping to do the same to my '79 F350 4x4, that's why I'm asking so many questions
I went with a 6" kit leafs front and rear, drop pitman arm and draglink and a carrier bearing drop bracket all supplied in the kit from Skyjacker. There are variations in the steering setup depending on your budget and time, crossover steering seems to be the ticket on the steering side of things. Caster is another issue but with any lifted truck its a compromise . I just finished what you see so I have not addressed pinion angle up front yet and as far as alignment nothing except checking toe was done so far. Front pinion angle will need to be addressed as its horrible right now but bringing the pinion up to straighten the angle some will also create alot of positive castor which is not best for straight line stability but like I said its a trade off and finding a happy medium is the trick. She drives good now so ive got some time to toss around ideas.
Im running a 37" tire with 4.10 gears which is not to bad.
Almost forgot about ya Franken-truck, no OD yet. Im just starting to think about that stuff. I may just go with the wide ratio C-6 and possibly a gear vendors OD or the other option could be a 5 speed.
Looks like you have a real nice project going on your 78, looks great!
D-60 rear, D-44 up front. If you are planning to wheel your truck and want to go 37 or bigger a D-60 up front would be a very wise investment. All this one will see is light trail use and I am easy on it so the 44 should hold up. If your hard on it a 60 is a must, it all depends on the way you drive it.
I have been trying to find a D60 but those suckers are hard to come by... atleast one in good shape.. I have also been looking for a D70 Rear but those are hard to come by too.
79trailer, I bought mine from Sanford,NC. It was a 2nd owner truck, all stock and very clean! Where in NC are you going? The beaches on the outer banks are a great place to 4wheel. Thats the only off-road mine sees. Is your blue/white...thats what it looks like...really nice!!
Fanken, I drive mine daily...about 100 miles a day...which TEXACO loves!!! I'm considering a Gear-Vendors overdrive, but havent made that plunge just yet.
53Fat, I used the exact lift and same components as 79trailer. The truck drives/rides great. I'm running 4.10 gears and 35" BFG's.
Jmono, I have a 44 in front and 9" in the rear. I will keep both b/c the only off-road it sees are the beaches of NC.
