I'm working on a 2001 f-150 4x4. Has a grinding noise when turning. I tried some addative to the oil seems to make it worse. So I Check the brakes-Fine,Remove axels and check bearings both-Fine, Remove thirdmember bearings look good everything is clean and free of any metal shaveings. I can see the disks for the limited slip behind 2 of the spider gears and they seem to look good with no discoloration. I decide to put it all back together and filled with standard 90 weight gear lube. The noise was a little better for a while and now is back.Is this a lube problem? Or is this the disks gone bad?
grinding is gears or bearings. it should do that when in a straight line driving. if the noise is a jerking motoin or grabbing as you turn, then it is the missing oil addative. you can not run the limit slip rear end without the addative. it will jerk, slip, grab. only when turning.
Sounds like your clutch plates are sticking. Usually, adding the additive will take care of it. If it doesn't, a bearing may have shelled out earlier and even though it was replaced, the fine metal particules are inside the clutches. Only way to fix it is to replace the clutch packs.
It's a friction modifier and you will need to add at least one bottle of it. Parts stores should carry it. You probably won't have a choice of brands. The correct gear oil is synthetic 75W-140.
