I have a 99 f-250 lariat sc and my compass is broken there is no display at all.If anyone can give me some kind of direction. I checked fuses but all is good. I don't even know how to get that overhead cobsole off either. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Ya mine quit too.You can remove it by grabbing the sides and pulling straight down ,just clips hold it on.I haven't had any luck repairing or replacing mine (used) ,new one is about $550 ,having it not work keeps my eyes off the gas mileage part of it ,I think that is how mine got wore out ,me resetting it all the time.
I've encountered the same problem - the LED display worked intermittently, then stopped working altogether. When I actually pulled the message center out of the overhead console unit, there a black mark in the upper left-hand corner of the display unit. I've been looking for a replacement part for the last two weeks (Ebay, other parts websites) and have yet to find one. I was hoping that one from a 2000 Excursion might match (I've found one for $160) but it looks like the mounting points are different (no idea if the connector is the same or different, anyone else?). Wish I had better news for you, but it looks like its a pretty common problem and there aren't a lot of options short of paying the dealership to replace it....
mine has the same dark spot on the upper left corner.I priced out a new one today it only comes with the complete console (what a rip off) and its $497.99OUCH!!!! thats freakin expensive for that stupid thing!!! I was hopeing that you can buy just the electronic part. OH WELL its not a nesessity
My dealership quoted me $432.95...I pulled the whole unit apart and found that the LED display itself is made by a company called Futaba in Japan. I did some searching online for the part and found that the display itself may still be available (part number 2-BT-199GN). I have a couple of electronic distributors checking on the availability, but at least one I talked to yesterday required a minimum order of $100. It looks like replacing just the LCD display would require some basic soldering skills, but nothing too major. I may buy some of the displays and see if i can make it work - I'm just opposed to paying $500 for an entire unit when the broken part costs $5. I probably sound like a chicken - cheap, cheap.
I remember reading that there is a resistor or some componant that lifts of the trace and can be soldered back on. May be cheaper than $500 for a replacement. Can't hurt anyway. Search the forum for the thread.
After resigning myself to having to buy a replacement unit, I found this site - http://www.forgotton.net/diesel/trip...ndexframe.html where the author described the exact problem. (Its just another version of the same solution that kawika already referenced in the previous post - sometimes I'm a little slow in getting back to the forums...bad me)
Apparently some of the resistors are very prone to coming loose and when they do, the overhead trip computer (or message center indicator - depending on you preferred choice of terminology) stops working. The darkened corner of the display does not (I repeat, does not) mean that the unit is defective (my hands have appropriately been slapped for even suggesting such a thing in the first place...).
When I looked at my unit (which has been sitting on my desk for the last 3 weeks - inching ever closer to the trash can), sure enough - one of the resistors had come lose and was completely detached on one side. After a quick trip to Radio Shack to buy some smaller solder, its now reinstalled and working like new!
Any way you look at, $2 for some solder is a helluva lot cheaper than $500 for a new unit or even $160 for one on Ebay! Before you buy - check the resistors on your own unit!
You will want to look at this thread also. I repaired mine 2yrs ago and it is still working. I just put a small drop of superglue on top of the resistor and that worked fine. Sure beat 3 to 5 hundreds bucks. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...console+repair
Thanks for the info ,I checked mine this morning after reading this and had it working by lunch time, had 3 loose resistors , one fell right off,my mother actually resoldered them for me with no problem ,she just retired from over 30 yrs of manufacturing and repairing electronic circut boards similar to these .To fine of work for me though ,i'll stick to the tig and mig welding.

Good to here. Take part of the $500 you saved and buy your mom dinner. LOL
Thanks for the great info. Mine did the same thing, just quit working. I have fixed now. I was afraid to price one at the dealer after reading these posting.
