I have this ongoing problem with AM radio static. I have cleaned all of the ground straps and that helped a little. Cleaned the battery posts, no change.
Pulled out the radio and checked the antenna connection at the radio and where it connects behind the glove box, no change.
I'm running out of ideas. My plug wires only have 67,000 on them, would it be worth it to change them? If so what would be the best brand choice for suppression wires?
Does the 99 have problems with the in tank fuel pump making radio noise like some of the earlier models?
I live in kind of a fringe area but the radio in my truck works perfect so I have ruled that out.
Anyone with any ideas? It would be appreciated.
First some simple diagnostics. Does the static go away when the engine is turned off and the key is on the Accessories position? If it does go away, does it then come back briefly if the key is turned to the run position (fuel pump comes on)? If not, does it only come back when the engine is running, and does the frequency vary with engine speed? Plug wires or alternator induced noise will typically increase in frequency as the engine speed increases. Have you looked at putting a noise suppresing condenser (capacitor) in the charging circuit?
Update: I took the radio out again and messed with the antenna lead again. Took it apart at the joint behind the glove box and disconnected it from the radio and then re-installed. What a surprise, no more static.
Jerry, thanks for the fuel pump noise test ideas. I will keep that in mind if my static returns.
