Harmonic Balancer bolt is shearing bolts. This is in my sons mustang. 302 roller motor. Does anyone have an idea why this is happening. This is the second time this has happened. Last time the crank was replaced and a new balancer replaced.
Are you sure you've got the correct balancer (weight)? Are you using ARP bolts? Also, do your pulleys line up? Some aftermarket balancers require pulley spacers on later model 5.0s.
Yes it was toqued to factory spec. Yes the pullies do line up. No it is not an ARP bolt. He does torque it pretty hard he loves to drive the car hard. no telling how many times it has seen 5 grand plus.
That's strange, I used to turn my 289 over 7 grand and never had a bolt fail. I always used the stock Ford bolt. How is the key and keyway in both crank and balancer? There should no play and the balancer should be a slight press fit. Good luck with it.
It sounds like something is out of alignment. How did you get the balancer on the crank? You didn't smack it on did you? If the balancer isn't seated all the way you can't get it torqued down properly. All the pulleys line up? Have you been putting blue threadlocker on the bolt? You could try putting a framing square around the pulleys to make sure they are aligned.
