Question Towing and tires?

I just got some new wheels, 17x9, but can't afford decent tires yet. I am using the tires that are currently on the wheels until I get the money for some good tires. The tires I have right now are Toyo Proxes, 285/60R17. They are rated to hold 2601lbs each. The tires I will get hold 3300lbs each. Will I be okay with the Proxes for a little bit. I have an 10k rated 18' flatbed I pull around. I will need to pickup my quads from the shop soon, and don't want to be in danger of overloading these tires. My truck weighs 6300lbs, I figure combined the tires will hold 10,400lbs, but with a trailer, the extra weight will be on the rear. Should I at least avoid pulling any full size vehicles on my trailer until I get new tires.

The only weight of the trailers' that is on the truck is the tongue weight. Those tires are fine. As a side note, you should be using an equalizing hitch. That will shift some of the trailer weight to the front axle. Once you have one, you won't go back.

When you do buy new tires, LT (light truck)tires rather than P (passenger) tires makes a much better tire for towing. The sidewalls are stiffer and it makes towing nicer even though the ride is slightly harsher. Seems odd to me that almost all pickups have passenger car tires on them from the factory.

Good point. He doesn't say whether they are P or LT's. I am not familiar with the Toyo label.

You know, I didn't even check. I know they are meant for light trucks and suv's. The tires I get will be 10 ply, these toyo's are only 6 ply. They will still be toyo's, Toyo Open Country A/T's I believe, one of the few brands that has the size I need. I should end up running a 285/70R17 I think, I looked around the papers, and couldn't find the same size in any other brands they carried at the shop. I may have the size wrong, but when I knew what it was, I couldn't hardly find it anywhere.
