Post Speedo Cable Lubrication???

Hi All:
Hope I'm in the right place? Since you talk lubrication I'll give it a try.

What can I use to lubricate a new speedo cable I'm putting in my 50 Ford?? I can't find anything locally that's made for that. Any help would be appreciated. Also, what's the best way to lube new cable??

Thanks, look for your replies!!!

A light grease is adviced, but I use Tri-Fold a TEFLON spray and have had good results. I had a noisey cable two years ago I reached under the dash and unhooked the speedo and sprayed teflon in the housing, the speedo cable is now quiet and smooth, two years later.

If you have the cable out, a good marine grade wheel bearing grease, lightly buttered on the cable with your fingers, as you feed it in, should work real good & last a long time.

i use a light coating of white grease. thick grease like marine or wheel bearing will cause the speedo needle to jump when its cold outside.

I always thought graphite was the standard speedo cable lube. I'm assuming that's what the black powder was in the 'speedo cable lube' bottle. A new cable shouldn't need lube unless specifically stated on instructions.

Greetings:
NO INSTRUCTIONS with the cable. This is an old NOS speedo cable for my 1950 Ford with an Overdrive tranny. Cable came in an envelope, and is dry as a bone. Because of dryness, figure some type of lube is needed???

If you pull the cable out a bit is there a dry, black residue on it?

Hi BuffDaddy! Welcome to FTE and thanks for joining us in the Oil and Lubrication forum!

It's not mandatory, but I am asking the new folks whom I greet to voluntarily append their profile information to include their "Location." A lot of times this helps others to help you by knowing a little about your topography and weather. You don't need to give enough detail for the Homeland Security black helicopters or the IRS to find you. Just your state will do. Thanks!

When I've installed replacement speedometer cables, I lubed them with the graphite powder that furball69 recommended. The graphite bottle has a pointed applicator on the end so you can 'puff' it into the liner before you run the cable through it.

A cool idea I discovered while riding motorcycles...

Most motorcycle shops have a cable greaser. It is a little doohickey about the size of a pack of gum. It slides over the end of the cable and has a fitting in the side for those little spray straws that come with a lot of spray lubes. You just squirt the spray lube into the cable til it comes out the other side. Works great. Beats the heck out of trying to drip it down the cable or removing the cable from it's jacket.

I used Yammaha, spray lube(has moly) or Molykote spray.

Good Luck,

JKim Henderson
