everything comes around. When I bought my 300 new back in 83, it was like a mortal sin....ewww, a six? When I ordered it, even the dealer's salesman said.."It won't be able to tow anything!"
Well, he's dead, the ole 300 is still alive, and I'm amused by how you guys heap praise on the 300. It has been one great truck.
When I got my truck, it was and still is my first truck, only truck, and future truck. All of my buddies at school always gave me crap about having a ford, as they are all chevy guys, and now, I'm the only one with my first truck. Every single one has either been worn out, blown motor, or just didn't run right. Well, mine still runs the same-great. Its a sore subject when I bring that up. Good ol 300/Ford.

Well I bought mine for $12500 in 83, 23 years later I'm retired, with no consideration to buying a hard-to-fix, sensor-laden plastic truck for $30,000!
This one's got lifetime warrantied parts all over it....and a member of the family!
$12,500 in '83? My '79 F100base 3-on-tree, power nothing stickered at less than $5000 off the lot. It's got a little over 100K now and running great. A little lifter tap and 14 MPG, but I'm tweaking it to get up to full potential. Love these old Fords. I origionally planned to replace the 300 with a 460 since it's "only a six", but after driving it for awhile, I can't imagine a better truck engine. All it needs now the typical Holly 390,offy, and EFI manifolds to complete it.
The $12500 was because it's an F150, Supercab, and long bed...listed at $9300.
The other $3200 is a bucket-full of options including XLT package, A/C, stereo cassette, sliding rear window....you name it.
It was alot of money, but I knew I'd have it a LONG time, so I got it equipped how I wanted it. Then I wouldn't need a new truck, this ones got it all already!
My fully-loaded 78 Grand Prix cost like $7500, so prices were climbing fast. That's when interest rates hit 17%.
i love those lifetime warranty parts. Now if I could only keep the ink on the receipts from fading. Maybe I need to laminate them. I 've got some receipts that are just white slips of paper now.
I bought my 84 when I was 15 years old back in high school, I still drive it to this day. I got it from the original owner who bought it a year old off the Ford lot. He used it hard and didn't take the best care of it, plus the harsh Michigan winters took it's toll on the body. I knew the truck pretty well because I worked with the old timer who owned it. I always wanted an old four wheel drive pickup to fix up and drive. When he bought his new truck, he gave me first dibs on the old one. I wanted it, dad was glad to hear it only had a six cylinder engine...and he was excited because it was a 4 speed manual. Long story short I spent the next year or so redoing the body, paint job, redid the whole brake system, clutch, rebuilt the engine, suspension work, and the list goes on. The only thing I have not completely overhauled is the transfer case. The first time I drove my truck to school I got a lot of crap for having a Ford, only having a straight six under the hood...blah blah blah! The funny thing is the people who gave me a hard time don't have their HS vehicles anymore, and my 84 F150 still runs and is reliable enough to drive everyday, on a long trip, you can take it anywhere and not have to worry about it. It has earned a ton of respect by my buddies and people who I off road with. I can't say enough about it my old Ford, she has done very well for me.
