PMRs are definately cheaper to make. Look at it from a bean counter's point of view. There were around a million 7.3 diesels made.
If Ford only saved $20 per engine (and they are saving more than that), then they just made a free $20 million. The bean counter's don't care how reliable it is - provided it lasts longer than the warranty or YOU can be blamed for the engine's demise.
By that do you mean "stock"? Or is there a higher horsepower number these engines are designed for (Oh I sure hope so)?

I think that Ford has maxed the design for the 7.3. If you look at some of the specs for the International T444e, it's redline is 2600 RPM.

Internationals performance specs are way lower than fords. Ford ups the power and the rpm to keep it competative. Many of the 444 in the navistar chassis are 175-195 hp.
