radiator cap causing coolant loss?

My 98' 4.0L has been losing coolant, not a huge amount but I do need to fill the tank about every six weeks. I have notice that there is coolant in one of the air conditioner charge valves that is closest to the radiator cap (there is no cap on the A/C valve. I have seen this several times and there seems to be more in there than the last time I checked. I'm wondering if a bad radiator cap could cause coolant loss? The Temp gauge holds steady. Any thoughts?

if the gasket is bad on the radiator cap there would most definitely be a leak.

I would first replace the cap, I hope that's all that's wrong. If you still notice coolant loss, time to consider checking for head gaskets, radiator leak, etc.

Check the lower intake bolts. Some of the 4.0's had a problem with the lower intakes loosening up, causing low-level coolant, and oil loss.

I replaced the lower intake gasket over a year ago, due to a coolant leak. Well that wasn't the problem it turned out to be a bad diverter valve. Replaced that and the leak went away, then it came back, but not as bad. I will replace the cap and see what happens.

May be time for a coolant system pressure check, before you replace the radiator cap.
Also test the replacement cap's pressure value, to make sure it's within the specified range, I've seen bad new parts, right out of the box!!!!

Hope the root cause of your coolant useage problem is a external one & it sounds like it may be, as you have signs that it is.

I had a coolant sipping problem at your rate, that the Dealer & Ford chased on my then new, 99 4.0L for almost three years & it was apparantly head gasket rooted, as replacement with "revised" head gaskets, by the Dealer under warranty in 01, seems to have finally fixed her up.

SO, if your problem turns out to be a head gasket rooted one, you might consider asking for the "Revised" version head gaskets, my Ford P/N's were Gasket Cyl Head, YU3Z-6051-AA & YU3Z-6051-BA.

Just some additional thoughts & info, for consideration.
