My '92 F150 SuperCab, 5.8L, 4x4, E4OD, with 207,679 miles, gets around 12 or so MPG in day to day mixed freeway and city driving. The previous owner said he got around 14 MPG, and that could be because he drove more on the freeways than I can during my day to day driving.
That is a whole lot better than my old 1959 F250 2x with a 292 V8 and a granny low 4 speed, which got 8 MPG, uphill, downhill, head wind, tail wind, loaded or unloaded. At that time gas prices were not too much worry, so I just drove it.
Dean, from what I have seen from owning 3 351 powered half ton is that your fuel consumption is pretty well spot on. I was avearaging about 12 on all of them mixed driving.

That poor 59 F250 though had 4.56 gears in the rear axle and no overdrive--- it was lower geared than today's trucks .
It is surprising that today's trucks cant get better gas mileage--but then---today's trucks are a lot heavier than these 87-96 F150s and have more horsepower and torque.
And I dont understand why these F150s dont get better mileage--my 4.10LS, M5R2, 5.0 F150 4x4's worst MPG is 16 MPG--and that is when I have to use the low BTU winter gas in the Denver area and when driving stop-go in the big city.
Good use of a manual transmission by the driver is a big factor in what a given drivetrain can deliver in MPG. I have always been able to better the EPA CITY or HWY fuel ratings by at least 10 or 15 percent in any vehicle--Honda Civic to F150.

Wow, did I open a bag of worms or what?
Another noticable difference in the electric fan setup besides the decrease in gas consumption, is the lack of engine braking. I'm guessing that engine braking consumes gas also. Someone chime in here on this one.
Interested in your findings. I wanted to do the electric fan switch out myself to take advantage of the HP and mileage improvement but was hearing they don't provide enough airflow when towing. The Flex-a-lite #295 set-up only moved 4500cfm. Had basically given up on the idea since I have a 2600# camper and tow a small boat or utility trailer with quads. Great to see the Perma-cool 19510 has the 5900cfm. I might have to reconsider.
Have you done any heavy towing with this set-up?
How'd it work out?
Any feedback for a fellow enthusiast would be great.
I went with a Hayden electric fan P/N 3680 and an Eldebrock engine oil cooler and have excellent cooling. I pull a 3500# camper in the summer, and with the a/c, 98 degree day @ 65 mph the truck runs at the "R" in normal on my stock gauge. Empty it runs on the top side of "N" to the middle of "O" on normal. The truck used to run very hot when towing big loads prior to the mods.
I wanted to try that fan kit but theres no way I'm shelling out $500.
I hear you brother, that's some big coin for an advertised (or hyped) mileage increase. Suppose the theory holds true but it would take an awfull long time to get that investment back.
I did speak with a tech a Perma-cool about a statement on the Summit page for their fans that stated it wasn't to be used in HD towing apps. His comment was they had included that for those who would over gross there trucks towing capability with a too heavy load. Towing within the mfgrs limits the fans work very well and will provide more than enough cfm to keep things cool.
Sounds great and all, but $500 - not convinced yet.
Currently waiting for my Thorley Tri-Ys to show up. We'll see what gains come from them first. Keep the info coming in though.
Gas mileage bla bla bla. People these are trucks. There made to haul or pull or both. If you're worryed about mileage buy a cheap little car. I use my trucks on the farm and maybe on the weekends and once in a while to work. Otherwise i drive my car. 22-25 is a lot better than the 10 i get with my truck.
well,I drive my taurus every day.I just happen to like my truck alot better. It also rides alot better.I guess I'll just start saving money for gas for the summer.I can't look down into cars with scantily clad women in a car, lol.
