My 79 F150 4x4 just won't seem to idle. i have to double pedal it most of the time to keep it from dying at stops or slow rolls. I have tried setting the carb but that didn't do it. I'm thinking it might be the egr or something along those lines. Any of you guys know what it might be? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
thanks--Nick
We need more info, is this an auto or stick, which engine is it.
In general, the EGR will cause the engine to die at idle. This is actually a test procedure for my other car! you block off a tube and it's supposed to die or near die, that tells you the EGR is working. so it sounds like the EGR system has a problem (valve stuck open, open at wrong time...) Also some have an idle position controller, but we need to know if this happens when hot, cold, all the time... one other thing a vacuum leak and poor tune, timming, broken PCV hose, can cause these problems
If you have the aluminum EGR plate under the carb (with the EGR hanging off the back of it)that might be your problem. The tend to burn out. You can't tell without taking off and then it may be hard. It has to seal perfectly or you get a big vacuum leak.1977 Ford F-100

LAST EDITED ON 11-Jan-01 AT 02:59 PM (EST)[p]its a 1979 with a 351m and a c-6 auto. it gives me problems most of the time, warm or cold. it will sometimes idle ok after it warms up, but not all the time, and if it does it may not for long. sometimes it will idle at about 2200rpms too. I didn't think vacuum was a problem because i've never had trouble with the power brakes. thanks guys.
one more thing. Its a bone stock 351m with the orig. 2bbl motorcraft carb, with 99,6xx original miles, no rebuild yet.
