I have an early 94 7.3l factory turbo diesel. I would like to upgrade the turbo and exhaust. I've read many posts about restriction, etc. I was looking to get some advise from people that have upgraded. Am I better off to buy a kit or to purchase everything individually. Any advise tips etc would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yea any suggestions on the good kits to buy or where the best place to buy them?? Most everywhere I look all they sell is powerstoke kits.
I have the same truck, but have not yet upgraded. There are only two options for the downpipe, ATS and banks. The ATS upgrade kit includes an improved turbo housing and exhaust outlet (3" ID rather than the factory 2.25" ID). The downpipe is 3" as well.
The banks kit retains all the stock turbo parts, but has a larger downpipe.
The ATS kit should give much better performace, but it also uses a somewhat problematic slip fit downpipe/outlet housing connection.
So botom line, if your after quick and easy get a banks dp and whatever exhaust suits your fancy. If you want maximum performance and efficency go with the ATS stuff.
Its slip fitted with a clamp I belive. Again, I have not actually taken mine apart yet, this is just from memory from seeing pictures here and elsewhere.
farmer--theres a clamp on it--you want all three ats pieces--and the slip fit aint bad--just make sure to clamp pipe good to keep in casting--then can turn up the ip--then turn up boost to 12 max--and hang on--wont believe its the same truck--get gauges on it--so can check what your doing--and no 10 cent gauges either--the truck is worth it--
The stock down pipe to out let is a "V" type clamp. Get the ats outlet housing and 3 inch down pipe, then look for a 4 inch exhaust (down pipe back) for a 94 1/2 power choke (same body style). As far as the ats fit "some" people do not test fit before installing, check the fit and if it is to loose go to your local muffler shop an borrow a expander ( center bolt type that fits in the tube) expand to fit - the fit sould be a "tap" fit. Out of 6 I have only had 1 that was a loose fit. Look at mods to the intake, ram air from the d/side of the rad or cowl air. Then you can turn up the boost and pump keep an eye on your guages - melted pistons can ruin your day. Make sure you are @ 8 deg timming.
