Coil Spring Insulators

I need to change my front coil springs since one of them seems to have collapsed. At this opportunity, I will change the insulators as well. Can someone give me an approximate price quote what these things cost in th US? I can get them here as well but if the difference in price is too big I can go and ask a friend to send them over.

Hi Tom,
Ford parts online (fordpartsonline.com) shows a wildly disparate pricing for the spring insulators: 2WD version: upper $9.68 lower $12.92 4WD: upper $70.32 lower $74.18.

Tomucen! No reason to order these parts from US. Mercedes insolators fit aero. Easy to find (diameter of front coil is about 130-140 mm, I dont remember accurate digits...). These insulatoras are just rubber rings! But it is difficult to do it! Be careful. Spring may extend with dangerouse force!

I dont know why, but during front suspention rebuild I find, that I have lower insolators only, but I added upper too. I feel no difference.

FYI Pablo, Mercedes parts might be cheap in Europe/Russia, but in the good old USA, they are expensive as heck. I have yet to see a Mercedes in the junkyard. If one is totaled, it is completely stripped to nothing.

tomucen, I would call around the local parts houses and get some pricing first before purchasing.

Here Ford Parts are cheapper too. But I can go to Mercedes dealer and get springs in 10 minutes ore I can order it and wait from USA for 3-4 weeks. But, electric componets by Bosch are really twice cheapper here, then for US and Japanise cars. And bosh parts are of very good quality! Fortunatly Gorkov automobile plant in Novgorod (Newcity) was build by Ford and many russian parts fit aero.

A quation for Tomucen: why do you want to change insilators? Do you here noise? If front suspention is too low, change springs, insolators are not so thick! And the other example: my left spring was brocken, but insolators were OK!

I figured when I'd change the springs I should as well change the insulators. If you guys tell me I don't have to - the better.
Pablo, I checked the MB springs you recommended. Both MB and parts stores sell only heavy duty rear springs for the W123. MB ask 130 Euros a piece, parts store 100 Euros. I can get the pair for the Aerostar for 200 Swiss Francs which is about 130 Euros.

MB parts are better. These springs are non-linear and they gives you better handling. But look at springs in shops carefully. There were different versions of w123, your springs must look like original!

Tom, unless they are worn through allowing metal to metal contact I would not replace them. My original ones are still in place after 250,000 miles.

Tom! Principally Aerocolorado is right! I have 320K on clock and I replaced insolators ones, but my left spring was brocken (there are many bad roads here and I used to overload it up to 1.7 metric tonn). Roads in EU are really good, especially German hightways. Were your ball joint, shoks, stabiliser bar links replaced? As I can see, ball joints' life is shorter, than springs' life.

yes, I have replaced the shocks and stabilizer bar bushings. While doing the springs I'll also change the lower ball joints.
I've ordered the springs today. Cost: $165 (would have been $65 at Autozone).

Well, the upper ball joints cannot come apart like the lower ones. I will replace them next year or so when I'm going to tackle the outer tie rods.

Tom,

what stabilizer bar bushings did you replace? The end links or the sleeve like bushings that get clamped to the frame? Do you have the really wide hollow bars? If so, what bushings and shells did you find that fit?

Yes, but there are 2 shops on our city, that make ball joints for heavy road conditions. I gave them my boll-joints (with rods of course), and they made ball joints with polymer parts inside and they joined new ball joines with my old rods with bolts. This weekend I can make snapshots and post it. Life of this joints are twice longer!
