I just bought this 1989 F150 super cab/short bed and had it in 2H until i decided to test the 4x4.
First there was a clunk everytime the wheel turned over.
Any clue???
Then the worst part. I took it out of 4x4 because I didn't like the sound and after about a mile the transmission/transfer case was grinding everytime I idled to a stop. Then it lost power completely.(engine still ran). So i shifted around the transfer case and now it's stuck in 4x4 LO.
Really Frustrating to drive at a top sped of about 40mph at 4500 rpm.
Need HELP!!!!
Need the truck to work
couldn't tell exactly what was clunking but itcame from the right front, but deffinitely not the transfer case.
The TC itself is the manual floor shifter.
couldn't tell if both front and rear were still pulling but I assume so.
I got a 1993 F150 4x4, 4.9 M5OD and I had the same issue. I have a bad U joint in the front axle and when it popped then I got stuck in 4x4. Finally got the hub to release and the transfer case "supposedly" in 2wd, come to find out it was still in 4x4. Long story short 50mph on freeway in 4hi and the fornt pinion gear snapped off at the bearing. I got no more front axle (it was 4 years ago) but the truck still runs. I am about ready to swap in a 302 with C4 2wd and I beams anyhow seeing as I get 120 miles on a tank, but that is another topic. Hope you get it worked out (and those U joints are a PITA to change.
My ujoints popped the first time I used 4wd.I don't think it was ever used.Put it in 4lo to push an engine hoist in a gravel driveway and it got stuck there.I had to have someone pull on the lever and I had to crawl underneath and hammer on the lever.
Could be a number of things. On these trucks I have noticed that the bolt on te linkage and lever at the t-case will work loose after a while and sometimes will get jammed. Will your t-case handle in the cab move? Or is it stuck there to? If it is not in a bind and moves freely while the truck is still in low you might have broke the shift fork. Let us know how the troubleshooting goes.

Thanks.
the Lever does move so iwanted to ask where exactly the shift fork is located.
Is it inside the Transfer Case? Do you know if it is an easy fix with just taking the TC out of the truck or would it be simpler for me to just get it fixed by someone professional?
Thanks
If it is the shift fork inside the transfer case I would suggest you take it somewhere to get fixed. I took mine apart and never got it working again, ended up swapping another from the junkyard.
The t-case is a very simple fix. Just get a manual and a t-case rebuild kit. I rebuilt mine, I was never into mine at all befire and it works great. You can find kits on ebay that have just the stuff that typically goes bad which includes the t-case. It is totally up to your mechanical skills though. If you do do it just rememeber that cleanliness is godliness. Keep it clean inside.
