my old computer puked after a lightning hit. my new 1 has McAfee loaded. i had just renewed my subscription to norton on my old 'puter.(just before the lightning hit), should i try to get it transfered to the new 1. is there a benifit besides the $49 i just spent. is transfer an option or did i lose it ? any help will be much appeciated.
i have had both and prefere McAfee. Godd customer service, decent prices and good software. But with comcast i now get McAfee for free so its a even better deal.
I think you should stay away from both, problem one..they cost money, problem two ...they slow down your PC.
There are many many other smaller, less intrusive and free programs available that do the job, that is, do the job as long as the user is savvy about were viruses, spyware and other pests come from.
you guys have been helpful. i've decided to just throw my laptop out the window and say to hell with it. just kidding. i guess i'll try to get a refund for the norton i bought for the other computer.
Personally I run Macs, so I don't worry about that stuff. But I also end up taking care of the peecees in the house that my wife and kid have and over time I've switched them all over to Norton. Never had a problem with McAfee, but I got really annoyed (at least the last versions I used) with all the pop ups that McAfee was constantly throwing up on the screen. Norton seems to work just as well, but stays out of the way a lot more. Just my .02 worth...
If you've ever had to try and re-install Norton after some files get corrupted you'll think Norton IS a virus. Just use a good free anti-virus program like AVG or Avast. If you feel like spending money, get Ghost and an extra disk and do image backups for when things really get hosed up.
appreciate all the input. i get the impression it's a 50/50 thing. i just hate the thought of losing the download i made to the 'puter that puked.. i'll keep trying for my refund and run McAfee on this 1 till it needs to be renewed. i will be buying the next one in a store so i have a disc in hand. just my thoughts
I would check and make sure the McAfee license is for a year. Most computers come with a 90 day license.
I have dealt with both McAfee and Norton and recommend Norton to all my customers.
Norton is easier to setup and use. They don't require you to wait for an email to activate it.
Things I dislike about McAfee, is they don't let you see when the virus program is going to expire. Just try and find it. also they do not do a good job with updates.
I have never had a problem with Norton Antivirus, and if you want to see when the license expires or definitions are up to date, then just open the program and it is right there.
I do not recommend Norton Internet security (Firewall) because it is to complex for the average user and has locked up a few pc before.
When I was still using a PC, I used Norton. I upgraded to a more expensive and (supposedly) better version and my computer began freezing up. I crashed it twice to clear the thing and rebuilt it all from scratch X2. After the second time going through this pain, my IP asked if I was using Norton. I answered that I was so he directed me to turn off the antivirus to see if that might correct my problems. IT WORKED.
I did away with Norton and began doing without, exercising caution to avoid virus'. This went on for a while with tons of pop ups, spy ware, etc etc until I finally got tired of it then switched to Mac. Bougth a new Macintosh G-5. No more problems. No more need for programs to combat programs causing me headaches.
I have been using Noton for years without a problem, The 400+ machines where I work are protected with Norton as well. I dont know that much about it, but it seems like a bigger company like Norton spends a bunch more time and money keeping us protected. I am happy to spend a few bucks for the protection they provide..how can a smaller company, who gives their software away have anywhere near the resources as Symantec (Norton)? Just my thoughts...
