hello everyone, i finally bought a truck...well a package deal. 2 1979 f-150's both with 351m/c6, one is a 4x4 and the other is a 4x2. i want to use the 4x2 body and interior on the 4x4 chassis. my questions are can i use the tranny and the tilt/cruise colum out of the 4x2 for the 4x4?
If the 4by x-fer case is divorced, then it may be possible to use the tranny. What am I talking about, I have no idea/experience when it comes to 4x4. The tilt column will probably work, but you might have to use the entire steering shaft.

Hi, are both trannies auto or stick? or is the transfer case seperate from the trannie? if one is a stick and the other is auto and the transfer case is bolted right to the end of the transmission then it probably wont interchange but the steering should bolt right in just use the entire column.

LAST EDITED ON 13-Jan-01 AT 11:14 PM (EST)[p]the t-case is bolted to the back of the tranny. someone told me that you could remove the tailstock and it should fit to the t-case. they are both automatics.
Hi, both automatics it will work but you will probably need to change the tail shaft itself pull the tail shaft housing off and seperate the transfer case and then measure the shaft and see if it is the same most are different the 4x4 being the shorter of the two. John
so what you are saying is that i can use it if i can interchange the tailshafts,it should work. the 4x4's tranny is toast and the 4x2's tranny works great. thanks for the input,it's nice to have some sort of gameplan before rippin' and tearin'.
You will have to swap the output shafts on the trannys around, Its the last part out of the case and the first in, so its pretty involved. A tranny shop will be happy to do it if you cant.
The tailshaft is a different length from a 2wd c6 to a 4x4 c6. I had the same problem when I did mine. I had a 2wd c6 that had a longer shaft. I found a 4x4 c6 in a junkyard for $75. and traded in my 2wd. since you already have one of each, a tranny shop would probably do the shaft swap for you.
Dave,
79 F-150 4x4, 390 w/C6, Edelbrock carb, 33X12.50 never will be finished.
well it sounds to involed for me and i don't know really how good the tranny is in the 4x2 so i'll just have a shop rebuild my tranny in the 4x4. then i'll know what i got. thanks to everyone for the input.
