Transmission removal question.

Hi all. 95 F-150 351 E4OD. Decided to buy a new built tranny, rather than waiting around on a rebuild for the one thats in it now.

Problem is, I think the torque converter flew apart, and locked EVERYTHING up. Can't even get the engine to turn over. Now when I go to pull it out, since I can't unbolt the torque converter from the flywheel, can I just unbolt the tranny, and carefully pull everything back, so that the torque converter is still bolted to the flywheel? Or am I going to have to find a way to get the engine to turn over enough to get the bolts out? Pretty sure I can leave the TC mounted, but I just have to be careful pulling it all back.

Now once I get the tranny off, I should be able to unbolt the TC from the flywheel right? Keep in mind the TC is trash, and the tranny is getting replaced (Not rebuilt..... yet at least.)

I have done it, although it was not the same as you mention. It was on a chevy with the 6.2 and an auto. The only thing I was told was to be absolutly sure that the tranny comes out straight, so it will not bend anything. I had to jack up the front of the motor to get clearance on the tunnel to pull the tranny so far back (and once it is angled it is a PITA to remove it straight) but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

In your case since all that stuff is trashed you should not have a prob doing that. You still need to come out fairly straight but it would not have to be perfect. As for removing the torque conver after the trannys is out, If the engine is not in fact locked up you should be free to turn the motor with a breaker bar to get the bolts out. Have fun with that tranny I bet it weighs 250# I have pulled and rebuilt mine 5 times in 350K. Good luck let us know what happens.

just pull it out, and drop it down. might need some extra hands, or a jack and some wood, or get or borow a tranny jack.

If the engine won't turn over the convertor is seized in the pump.
Even if the convertor remains attached to the flex plate you will have a terrible time removing the transmission.

I had a customer a few years back with the same problem.

The entire drive train had to be removed.
The engine was anchored and I used a come along to pull the units apart.

Let me assure you it was not a fun project.

Yes you can do that, but if you were going to be reinstalling the same transmission you need to be careful doing it that way as you can damage the front seal easilly. Once the tranny is out you can turn the crank to unbolt the converter

If the convertor is seized in the pump the engine can not be turned or the convertor removed.

The convertor and pump will be destroyed.
