4.10 or 4.30

Going to order a new F350 dually with v10. Trying to decide on 4.10 or 4.30?
Tow a utility trailer about 10,000 lbs. Thinking of going larger.
Any suggestions? Leaning towards the 4.10.
Gas mileage any different?
Will the engine rev alot higher at highway speeds with the 4.30?
Thanks

I vote for the 4.30...again.

The engine will rev higher, but you'll gain just that little bit more of power when you need it with a heavy load...and the tranny won't keeping jacking in and out of OD as much.

JMHO, nothing higher geared than 4.30's. Lower? More than likely.

If you're planning on going over the stock tire size, 4.30 fo sho. If you're gonna stay stock, you could get by with 4.10's but every huge hill you come to you'd be wishing you had those 4.30's.

I see in Fords towing chart. The maximim load going form 4.10 to 4.30 is 14,200 to 15,000 lbs. That's why i was leaning to 4.10. i only tow about 2-3 times a month.

The difference in MPG does not exist. People on this site are getting the same mileage with either the 4.10s or 4.30s. Go with the 4.30s. The difference with RPMs on the highway is AT MOST 250 RPMs higher, and those extra RPMs will not hurt your mileage. Like Big Orn said, your truck will work less, there will be less tear and wear on the drive line because it won't take as much energy to get the truck moving with or without a load.

You have to remember these engines are not diesels. You need to rev these engines to get them into the fat part of the torque curve and the 4.30s will help you get that much closer to the bottom of the torque curve.

And you also said that you are thinking of going for a larger trailer. That right there just screams at you to get the 4.30s. You won't be sorry with the 4.30s.

Get the 4.30

the added advantage of the 4.30 gear set is a real slow low and slow reverse for inching around.

The V-10 likes R's so it will perform quite well for you with the 4.30.

Then I'd get 4.30s! I was just wondering the upcharge for them.

Can you imagine if you didn't get them and wanted them later what it would cost!? Holey Moley! I'm staring at $800+ just to regear my rear axle to 4.30's.

Hopefully you've gotten your answer?

You can still get 3.73s with a 5.4. With a V10, you only have two choices and they are very close. I have 4.10s in my F350 4x4 LB SRW and no hill has ever made me me want lower gears. Empty, this truck goes up everything in OD. I have to feather the throttle, every time I take off or I spin my rear tires. Yes, I have LS.
I am going to go to the 65 series when I replace the tires and this gives me the same ratio as 4.30s, that's how close these two rear ends are.
I raced an 03 PSD last week and beat him. He had a smaller model truck and I had 400 pounds of wood pellets in my box. I pull an 06 Montana Fiver just fine.
Maybe the 2valve V10s had trouble with 4.10 gears, my 3 valve is just fine with them.

Gearing and Tire Sizes, Maybe I need to figure it out going the other way. What the largest tire I can put on a F250 CC 4x4 with 4.30 gears to = the 4.10s gearing.
Im I to assume then that even though im putting larger tires on that my gas mileage would be equal to that of a stock truck with 4.10 gears.

This would be my first truck with larger tires than stock and I want to make sure Im getting it right.
