Red face transmission help

I was driving on the expressway yesterday and all of the sudden my transmission starts to slip and eventually goes out all together. I coast to the emergency lane, get out, and look under the truck. There was smoke coming from the trans and a burnt smell in the area. Now, I know very little about transmissions but im thinking I burnt the clutch at least I hope that is all it is. If so is there anything I should replace other than the clutch while the trans is out? On the other hand, if it sounds more serious like the trans is bad what choices do I have for a donor? Right now I have nothing, no gears work at all.

The truck is an F150 1984 4.9 not sure of the trans but it is a 4 speed (4th gear is overdrive.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Don

more info?

I am guessing that the truck is a manual transmission by what you said but am not sure. an automatic has 4 gear as overdrive so I need to know if its an automatice then you can expect to have to put in a new one. If its a manual I would pull the transmission and look at the clutch. If the clutch disc is worn out then it probable was the clutch. I would also check the clutch linkage to see if it might have been in a bind and held the clutch in enough to allow it to slip.

where to look

I think there is a good chance that the clutch is smoked by what you described but it is odd that it went out while driving down the road? Have you been having problems with the clutch slipping in the past? I would look and see if there are any bent componets interfering with the clutch.

If it is the clutch then you may have to by a clutch kit they come with a new throw out bearing and pressure plate, clutch disc, and a pilot bearing. It is a good idea to replace all of the wear componets while you are in there. It can save a lot of headaces in the end. Be sure and use High temp grease on the transmission input shaft but not a lot. Just enough to have a film of it.

I just recently got the truck and it ran poorly. After the carb rebuild it ran better

I just recently got the truck and it ran poorly. After the carb rebuild it ran better and the expressway was a test-drive so im not sure if it was slipping before or not.

Thanks for the input, ill pull the tranny, check the clutch first, and go from there.
